Brandon Burgoon collected his $10,000 prize at PPMS.
What won the race: Taking command with an outside move by early leader Jeremy Steele, fourth-starting Brandon Burgoon of McDonald, Pa., overcame several late-race restarts to lead the final 34 laps of Saturday's $10,000 14th annual Bill Hendren Memorial at PPMS. Burgoon bagged his first career RUSH Crate Late Model Series victory and his third of the season at PPMS, adding to June 1 and June 15 local RUSH Crate triumphs.
Quotable: “I can’t believe this, this is awesome. The way the night was going, it’s almost like the same as last night … quick time, I won my heat, finished fourth in the dash, so I’m like ‘what’s gonna happen next,’” Burgoon said. “That car was so good the entire race, it did get tight a couple times, but I was able to adjust the way I was driving it and it would take off every time.”
Key notes: Jeremy Steele led the opening six laps from the pole before slowing from third and pulling off on lap 22. He was credited with 24th. ... Twelfth-starting Jeremy Wonderling and Michael Norris traded runner-up honors multiple times over the second half, with Wonderling taking the spot for good on a lap-34 restart and finishing 3.578 seconds behind Burgoon. Wonderling's runner-up lifted him to the RUSH points lead, one marker ahead of teenager Brock Pinkerous. ... The 10th-starting Norris, of Sarver, Pa., settled for third. ... Dillon Brown momentarily took third when Steele slowed, before slipping to finish fifth. ... Devin Brannon advanced 12 spots and placed ninth. ... Five incidents slowed the racing action in the final 13 laps, including the race's first stoppage on lap 28 when Zach Gunn slowed from 17th. ... Joe Martin, defending Bill Hendren Memorial winner, slowed from 15th before pulling off on lap 29. ... Mason Zeigler, winner of Friday's $4,000 weekend opener, nosed hard into the frontstretch wall on lap 36, bringing out the fourth yellow flag. Zeigler appeared to get right-rear hooked by Kyle Lukon while battling him for sixth. ... Max Blair slowed with a flat left-front tire on the ensuing restart after apparent contact with Lukon. Both Zeigler and Blair used body language to express their frustration with the way they were raced in the closing laps. ... The event honored Bill Hendren, the founder of Hendren Racing Engines which revolutionized and perfected the Crate engine. Bill died on March 19, 2011, but his impact on Crate Late Model racing live on through his sons, Steve and Mike Hendren, who continue to operate the family business. ... The 40-lapper lasted 35 minutes, with 18 starters running at the checkers. ... Benjamin Easler of Linesville, Pa., led all 10 laps to win the $350 non-qualifier race courtesy of D&V Jewelers.
On the move: Brock Pinkerous of Ellenville, N.Y., started 20th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Burgoon’s Bob Bentz and Ken Chernik-owned Rocket Chassis is powered by an Ingram Racing Engine and sponsored by Stan’s Transmission Service, Frankland Racing Supply, NAPA Auto Parts, Daugherty Motorsports and Close Racing Supply.
