Chris Simpson heads for a $10,000 MLRA Fall Nationals victory.
What won the race: Working under his older brother on the 19th lap, eighth-starting Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, led the rest of Saturday's 50-lap MLRA Fall Nationals finale at Lucas Oil Speedway for a $10,000 victory. The winner took the checkers after back-to-back runner-up finishes the previous two nights, taking the checkers 1.008 seconds ahead of Stormy Scott. Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association points leader Chad Simpson ended up fifth after leading the first 18 laps.
Quotable: "I don't know what happened to Ryan (Gustin). I figured if he finished, he'd probably be in the top three," said Simpson, who finished second to Gustin the previous two nights. "It'd have been fun to battle it out with him. We were both good all weekend, so to top off with $10,000, I'll take it."
Key notes: Chris Simpson notched his 18th career MLRA victory and his second of the season at Wheatland after winning August's $7,000 Ron Jenkins Memorial opener. ... Runner-up Stormy Scott was docked a row for jumping the initial start. ... Third-place finisher Tony Jackson Jr. was 4.5 seconds behind Scott at the checkers. ... Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, who won Thursday and Friday's $5,000 features, retired after 30 laps while running 10th and drew the race's lone caution. ... The night ran a little long with a wet racing surface greeting the drivers.
On the move: Dillon McCowan of Urbana, Mo., started 16th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Simpson’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Larry Davidson Trucking, Hot Rod Septic Treatment, Hoker Trucking, C&J Trucking, Robert Mitchell at RLM Enterprises, Factory CS Lifestyle Brand, Swift Springs, Speedwerx Performance Exhaust and Capital Race Decals.
