Cory Hedgecock celebrates his victory in the Butterball Wooldridge Memorial at Richmond Raceway.
What won the race: Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., led all 59 laps from the outside front-row to win Saturday night’s Butterball Wooldridge Memorial at Richmond Raceway. Hedgecock earned a $12,059 payday for his first Super Late Model victory of the season in the event co-sanctioned by the Ultimate Heart of America Series and the Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series.
Quotable: “The two (laps) to go (caution flag), I didn’t like that one, but other than that I actually didn’t mind them because that lapped traffic was rough,” Hedgecock said. “There were windshield wipers out there, but hell, I might’ve been one too.”
Key notes: Hedgecock finished 0.833 of a second ahead of two-time Wooldridge Memorial winner Ricky Weiss (2022, ’23). … Fifth-running Jensen Ford of Johnson City, Tenn., drew the first caution of the race on lap nine with a flat right-rear tire. … Josh Rice was running third when a broken rear end forced him to retire during a lap-21 caution period for debris. … The fifth and final caution flew heading to the final lap was for debris on the frontstretch. … Fourth-place finisher Rusty Schlenk was crowned the $15,000 champion of the 2024 Valvoline American Late Model Iron-Man Series. ... Cyle Forgy clinched the Ultimate Heart of America title by one point over Larry Martin Jr. ... The event honored National Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer Paul “Butterball” Wooldridge of Frankfort, Ky., a longtime racer and supporter of Richmond Raceway; Wooldridge died on Christmas Day in 1987 at the age of 56. … It was originally scheduled for Aug. 17 before getting postponed by rain and co-sanctioned with the Iron-Man Series.
