Ethan Dotson (74x) tiptoes by Zack Mitchell (57) to win first $3,000 prelim.
What won the race: Taking control with a turn-three slide job past early leader Zack Mitchell, third-starting Ethan Dotson of Bakersfield, Calif., led the final 18 laps of Friday's first $3,000 Coors Light Fall Classic semifeature at Whynot Motorsports Park. Dotson dashed to the checkers 1.792 seconds ahead of pole-starting Oakley Johns, who slipped as low as fifth by lap six before recovering to trail Dotson the final 13 laps.
Quotable: “(Mississippi) has been really good lately, I can’t thank all my guys and the racetrack. The racetrack was awesome to race all over it,” Dotson said. “I was overdriving it early, then once that red (flag) came out I just sat there and told myself ‘quit being a dipshit’ and slow down and hit the bottom … super fun racing with those guys, a bunch of good racers and a badass racetrack.”
Key notes: Although not a full-field victory, Dotson grabbed his fourth overall triumph of the season and his third for ASD Motorsports, all of them coming since Oct. 4 at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala. ... Zack Mitchell led the opening 12 laps before giving way to Dotson and fading as low as sixth, before recovering to fifth on lap 26. ... Joseph Joiner gained five spots and prevailed after a battle with Brandon Overton following a lap-20 restart, finishing third. ... Evan Ellis finished ninth, earning the final transfer spot into Saturday's 60-lap main event; all other finishers will need to qualify through a consolation. ... Clay Stuckey gained 10 spots and finished 11th. ... The race was slowed by two incidents, the first necessitating a 15-minute red flag for cleanup after Shephen Brantley hopped the turn-three cushion and rolled onto his roof; although uninjured, it took track safety officials several minutes to right Brantley's car and get him out. ... The second stoppage came on lap 20 when Morgan Bagley overdrove turn three, making hard contact with Brandon Overton's left-rear, as they battled for fourth. Overton was able to keep his car pointed straight, while the resulting contact caused Bagley to spin, ending his night. ... The first semifeature lasted 26 minutes, with 16 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Trey Mills of St. Augustine, Fla., started 19th and finished sixth.
