Mason Zeigler displays his $24,000 Keystone Cup winner's check.
What won the race: Mason Zeigler of Chalk Hill, Pa., controlled all 60 laps of Saturday's seventh annual Keystone Cup at Bedford Speedway for his career-richest victory in the half-mile's season-ending event. Pole-starting Max Blair of Centerville, Pa., finished 0.964 of a second behind Zeigler, who outran Blair from the outside front row on the initial start to claim the $24,000 top prize.
Quotable: "I had a whole other gear I could’ve kicked into the whole race, really. The car was fantastic," Zeigler told DirtonDirt.com. "We hot-lapped, and I was like, ‘This thing is spot on. I don’t want to do anything.’ It was that way all night. It was so maneuverable. I didn’t realize they were that close to me in lapped traffic. I thought Bryan (Liverman, my signal guy) was showing me one stick, which means you’re by yourself. But he was showing me two together, that they’re close. I saw a black nose, and I was like, ’S—, I have to go.’"
Key notes: Zeigler’s last three Super Late Model victories have come at Bedford's half-mile: the last two Labor Day Classic events, each worth $12,055, and his first Keystone Cup triumph Saturday. Including Friday's $2,400 semifeature victory, Zeigler earned more than $26,000 over the weekend. … Despite starting from the pole, 2021 Keystone Cup winner Max Blair didn’t lead a lap in his runner-up finish. … Boasting a new Vic Hill Engine under the hood of his Jim McBee-owned No. 11 entry, Kyle Hardy of Stephens City, Va., charged from eighth to finish third after running second for laps 19-37. Hardy pulled within car lengths of Zeigler multiple times in the lead battle amid traffic but couldn’t make anything more happen. … Dan Stone brought out the lone caution on lap 19 when he slowed out of fifth with a flat tire. … Former Winchester, Va., standout J.T. Spence completed his first feature since 2015 aboard James Stevens's No. 11 Rocket Chassis as the 41-year-old started 22nd and finished 18th. Spence, a former track champion at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway and Winchester (Va.) Speedway, had been away from racing the last eight seasons but is now planning a return to regional racing. ... Nineteen drivers were running at the finish with 16 finishing on the lead lap.
On the move: Dylan Yoder of Middleburg, Pa., started 12th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Zeigler’s Rocket Chassis has a Clements Racing Engine and sponsorship from Greenlane.ai, Bx Logistics, RBS Auto & Trailer Sales: Sykesville, MD, RBS Truck Collision, Fox Shocks, VP Fuels, Ohiopyle Vacation Rentals, Mathison Gas: Uniontown, Pa.
Points chase: Kyle Lee of Mercersburg, Pa., was crowned the 2024 Bedford Speedway track champion.
Current weather: Clear, 54°F
Car count: 41
Fast qualifier: Alex Ferree
Time: 19.313 seconds
Polesitter: Max Blair
