Winner Ricky Thornton Jr. (20rt) stalks Drake Troutman (7).
What won the race: Winning his third straight World Finals race stretching back to last season, polesitter Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., went around race-long leader Drake Troutman on 22nd lap and led the rest of Friday's 35-lap World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series at The Dirt Track at Charlotte for a $15,000 payday. Second-starting Troutman finished 0.780 of a second back in the caution-free event with Chris Madden third.
Quotable: "I felt really good up there. I got about halfway through the race and I'm like, 'Man, I won this thing on the wall last year for the final night.' I'm like, I might as well go up and try it," Thornton said. "I feel like I got to (Troutman) but once I got to Drake, I couldn't really do anything because he was running just high enough. ... Luckily he got stuck behind one or two of those lapped cars."
Key notes: The WoO title chase tightened up with Nick Hoffman, who entered the race third, 50 points in arrears, posting a sixth-place finish (from 10th) while Bobby Pierce (behind 44 points entering the race) was 13th and points leader Brandon Sheppard (18th). ... Sheppard still leads, but his margin is just 26 over Hoffman and 34 over Pierce, who slips to third. ... Ricky Thornton Jr. notched his first WoO victory of the season and fifth of his career. ... He won the final two World Finals races last season. ... Thornton brushed the wall a few times in turn two without incident. ... Runner-up Drake Troutman, who before the race wasn't certain his engine would last because it was smoking in heat action, recorded his best-ever WoO finish; his previous best was 11th at Raceway 7 in Conneaut, Ohio, on May 16. ... Third-place finisher Chris Madden had a flat tire by the time he reached the scales postrace. ... Another $15,000-to-win World Finals preliminary program is scheduled for Friday. ... WoO sprint cars and Super DIRTcar Series modifieds are also on the card.
On the move: Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., started 17th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Thornton’s Koehler Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Coltman Farms Racing, Hoker Trucking, Capital Waste, Excel Floor Covering, Five Star Metal Buildings, Ultimate Towing, FK Rod Ends, Dynamic Drivelines, Ultrashield Race Products, Sharp Advantage Safety Products, Winning Edge Carburetion, Sunoco Race Fuels, Bilstein Shocks, Midwest Sheet Metal and EMD Wraps.
