Ricky Thornton Jr. celebrates his third Castrol FloRacing victory of the season.
What won the race: Repelling a late-race charge from Bobby Pierce, second-starting Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., led all but the first lap en route to a $20,000 victory in Friday's 40-lap Peach State Classic prelim at Senoia Raceway. Thornton beat Pierce to the checkers by 2.861 seconds for his third Castrol FloRacing Night in America Series victory of the season and the sixth of his career.
Quotable: “I kinda figured out on that restart (Jonathan Davenport’s) crew guy was screaming to J.D. to move down on the restart and I’m like, 'Well, heck, if he’s telling him to move down, I’m gonna try it,’” Thornton said. “It just kinda worked out for us. I could really charge into one super hard and skip across the first hole and then just hit the cushion down the back straightaway. It was pretty demanding. I don’t think we’ve been on a track this demanding all year.”
Key notes: Thornton tallied his 24th overall feature victory of the season. ... Pierce regained the runner-up spot on lap 23 and cut Thornton's lead to 0.151 of a second by lap 31 before slipping back in the closing stages. ... Pierce carries a 21-point advantage into Saturday's Castrol tour season finale and can clinch his second straight series title with a sixth-place finish or better. ... Jonathan Davenport led the opening lap from the pole before giving way to Thornton, then traded second twice with Pierce between laps 18 and 23 before slowing on lap 25. He was credited with 12th. ... Third-starting Garrett Alberson reclaimed third when Davenport slowed and finished in the spot. ... Provisional starter Spencer Hughes improved 15 spots and rounded out the top 10. ... Dylan Knowles won his heat race and ran as high as third in the opening laps before slipping to 11th by the 10th lap; retired in 16th. ... The 40-lap feature, cut from 50 after heavy rain Thursday created rugged track conditions, was slowed twice by caution flags. ... The first was for a lap-two tangle involving Matthew Taylor, Ethan Dotson and Carson Ferguson; Taylor appeared to spin from 18th, clipping the right-side of Dotson's ASD Motorsports entry before Ferguson piled in. Taylor and Dotson retired while Ferguson continued until pulling off on lap 15. ... Fifth-running Ashton Winger slowed on lap 17 after showing smoke. ... The Peach State opener lasted 14 minutes with 11 starters running at the finish.
On the move: Daulton Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., started 19th and finished fourth.
Winner's sponsors: Thornton’s Koehler Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Coltman Farms Racing, Hoker Trucking, Capital Waste, Excel Floor Covering, Five Star Metal Buildings, Ultimate Towing, FK Rod Ends, Dynamic Drivelines, Ultrashield Race Products, Sharp Advantage Safety Products, Winning Edge Carburetion, Sunoco Race Fuels, Bilstein Shocks, Midwest Sheet Metal and EMD Wraps.

Heat race recap

Pole-starting Jonathan Davenport dominated the first heat race, leading all 10 laps and winning by 2.810 seconds over third-starting Ashton Winger, who trailed him the entire way. Second-starting Trey Mills finished third, grabbing the final transfer spot into Friday’s 50-lap, $20,000-to-win Peach State opener. Zach Leonhardi pulled off after getting lapped on the seventh circuit. … Garrett Alberson earned a flag-to-flag victory in the second heat, winning by 1.203 seconds over second-starting Nick Hoffman. Max McLaughlin ceded the third spot to Kyle Bronson for the opening four laps before regaining the third and final transfer position. Bronson settled for fourth. Lavon Sparks pulled off on lap seven. … Bobby Pierce led the entire way to win heat three by 0.883 of a second over second-starting Dennis Erb Jr. Sam Seawright appeared to lose the third spot to Carson Ferguson before a lap-four caution negated Ferguson’s move; he settled for fourth. The lone caution flew when Hudson O’Neal slowed from sixth; he continued and finished fifth. Fifth-starting Cory Hedgecock never got up to speed and pulled off on the second lap. … Ricky Thornton Jr. raced to a green-to-checkered victory in the fourth heat, crossing the line 1.023 seconds ahead of second-starting Payton Freeman. Tyler Erb held third the entire way, punching his ticket into the 50-lap feature. Chad Tuten pulled off on lap seven. … Second-starting Dylan Knowles took advantage of a lap-two restart and led the final nine laps, winning heat five by 1.8 seconds over third-starting Austin Horton, who grabbed the runner-up spot from Michael Page on lap seven. The pole-starting Page, of Douglasville, Ga., led the opening lap before slipping to third. Tyler Stevens (fourth) and Cla Knight (fifth) were the only other drivers to complete 10 laps. The race’s first caution came after Page was called for jumping the opening start. Wil Herrington spun and slowed with a left-rear flat on the second lap after heavy contact with Spencer Hughes. Herrington was unable to change the tire and did not continue, while Hughes slowed from fourth with a flat right-rear to draw the fourth caution on lap eight. The third slowdown came on lap five when Jackson Hise slowed from sixth with a flat right-rear and pulled off. Zack Mitchell called it a night under the lap-five yellow. … Second-starting Jason Feger used a turn-one slider to grab control from Joseph Joiner on lap six and paced the final five laps to win the sixth and final heat race by 2.104 seconds over Joiner, who led the opening five laps. Fifth-starting Matthew Taylor grabbed the third and final transfer from Montana Dudley on lap six and beat him to the checkers by 2.178 seconds. The lone yellow flag came on the second lap when Haiden Cowan slowed from seventh and called it a night.
