Winner Brandon Overton is flanked by runner-up Tyler Erb and third-finishing Cody Overton, the winner's younger brother.
What won the race: Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., fought past race-long leader Tyler Erb on the 12th lap Saturday at East Alabama Motor Speedway and raced to a $10,053 Schaeffer's Spring Nationals victory. Overton and Erb swapped the lead in a brief early battle and again late with Overton winning by 2.299 seconds for his 11th career series victory.
Quotable: “(Tyler Erb) is my buddy. I wasn’t gonna run into him and he wasn’t gonna run into me, but I guarantee he wasn’t gonna give me much room out there,” Overton said. “Hard racing, hell of a racetrack … we had the wrong tire on so I knew when we got to riding there and I said ‘damn I better hurry up and get the lead.’ Actually I think Tyler had the right tire on, it’s kinda crazy we’re all from down here and he’s from wherever, Texas and he puts the right tire on, so hats off to him.”
Key notes: Brandon Overton, who earned his first victory as a father, rebounded from a defeat one night earlier in Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series action at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Miss., when he was leading on a restart with six laps remaining but ended up seventh. ... Overton was the 2017 Spring Nationals champion and his previous series victory came 365 days earlier at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, Tenn. ... It was Overton's third career Spring Nationals victory at EAMS (2022-'23). ... Tyler Erb, who led the first 11 laps, unofficially edged ahead on a lap-38 slide job in turn one, but Overton went right back ahead on the backstretch and kept the runner-up at bay the rest of the way. ... Erb was gunning for his second straight EAMS victory after capturing last fall's National 100. ... Two cautions slowed the action. ... Fifth-running Montana Dudley spun on the 20th lap (during the caution he showed his displeasure with Wil Herrington). ... Dylan Knowles scratched from the feature after breaking the team's only engine. ... Garrett Smith of Eatonton, Ga., led all 40 laps to win Friday’s $7,553 series weekend opener at Buckshot Speedway in Clanton, Ala.
On the move: Dalton Cook of Smiths Station, Ala., started 16th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Overton's Riggs Motorsports Longhorn Factory Team is sponsored by NAPA Auto Parts, Dude Wipes, Coltman Farms Racing, UNOH, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Heartbeat Hot Sauce, Garnto Southern, Bilstein, Big Dog Stump & Tree, RW Powell Construction and Muscle Factory.
