Ricky Thornton Jr. led all 25 laps of Friday's preliminary feature.
What won the race: Polesittter Ricky Thornton Jr. of Chandler, Ariz., led all 25 laps unchallenged to win Friday's second Gateway Dirt Nationals preliminary night at The Dome at America's Center in downtown St. Louis. Thornton cruised to the checkers 1.136 seconds ahead of Nick Hoffman to grab the $5,000 payday and his 26th overall Late Model victory of the season.
Quotable: “I kinda was trying to pace myself off Hud(son O’Neal) and Spencer (Hughes),” Thornton said. “I really didn’t want to see (the lap-22 caution) just because I knew I was gonna have to move around a little bit. The bottom got so clean there and it wasn’t quite (taking) rubber, but it cleaned so bad that if you missed it, it wasn’t good. But then I went to the top and drove around two lapped cars, so I don’t know.”
Key notes: Thornton grabbed his second win of the week at The Dome after winning Thursday's 20-lap prelim in his modified. ... Nick Hoffman trailed Thornton the entire distance, but never truly challenged him. ... Gordy Gundaker took third on lap 13 and completed the podium finishers. ... Thornton, Hoffman and Gundaker each clinched guaranteed starting spots in Saturday's 40-lap, $30,000-to-win finale. ... Seventh-starting Myles Moos grabbed fourth from Freddie Carpenter as they came to take the white flag. ... The second-starting Carpenter, of Parkersburg, W.Va., slipped to fifth. ... Bobby Pierce gained three spots and placed sixth. ... The lone yellow flag came on lap 22 when Spencer Hughes slowed from 15th and retired with a flat right-rear. ... The 25-lapper lasted seven minutes, with 14 starters completing the distance. ... Darin Weisinger Jr.'s fifth heat melee sent him through the turn-two catchfence, necessitating a 75-minute stoppage for cleanup and repairs.
On the move: Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., started 17th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Thornton’s Koehler Motorsports Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Coltman Farms Racing, Hoker Trucking, Capital Waste, Excel Floor Covering, Five Star Metal Buildings, Ultimate Towing, FK Rod Ends, Dynamic Drivelines, Ultrashield Race Products, Sharp Advantage Safety Products, Winning Edge Carburetion, Sunoco Race Fuels, Bilstein Shocks, Midwest Sheet Metal and EMD Wraps.

Heat race recap

Ricky Thornton Jr. rolled to win the first heat race, leading all eight laps and taking the checkers 3.322 seconds ahead of second-starting Myles Moos. Both drivers punch their ticket into Friday’s 25-lap prelim. The race’s lone caution came on the fourth lap when Cyle Forgy and Kyle Mixon tangled in turn three; both continued, with Forgy finishing seventh and Mixon in eighth. Rusty Schlenk showed his displeasure with Amelia Eisenschenk after the checkers. … Nick Hoffman dominated heat two from the pole, leading all eight laps and beating Bobby Pierce to the line by 2.070 seconds. The only yellow flag was displayed on the second lap when Scott Bell had a solo-spin in turn four; he continued, but settled for 11th. … Pole-starting Tanner English led the entire way to win heat three by 2.190 seconds over third-starting Josh Rice. Rice grabbed the runner-up spot from Jason Welshan on lap five and beat him to the checkers by 0.924 of a second for the final transfer position into Friday’s $5,000-to-win main event. The opening start was called back. … Freddie Carpenter ran the bottom to perfection en route to winning heat four by 1.869 seconds over Derek Fisher, who trailed him the entire way. … Carter Schlenk earned a flag-to-flag victory in the fifth heat, winning by 0.314 of a second over Jordan Barbee as Jack Riggs nipped Delbert Crum by 0.041 of a second for third. The first slowdown came on the opening lap when Jonathan Woods spun in turn one while Riggs and Dylan Thompson tangled in turn three. The Riggs and Thompson incident necessitated a five-minute red flag to separate their vehicles. Thompson came home in eighth. The second yellow flew when Barbee was called for jumping the ensuing restart. The third incident necessitated an hour-long red flag when Thompson and Cole Babcock tangled and spun while battling for fourth, leaving Darin Weisinger scrambling to avoid. Weisinger caught a catchfence post with his right-front tire, causing his car to stop suddenly before breaking through the fence, allowing the nose of his car to exit the track. Track preparation was completed as multiple tow trucks were needed to lift Weisinger’s car and separate it from the temporary wall and fencing. The heat race lasted nearly 90 minutes. … Gordy Gundaker scored a green-to-checkered triumph in the sixth and final heat race, winning by 1.963 seconds over second-starting Austin Howes. Howes held off Hudson O’Neal the entire distance, as O’Neal nipped him at the line on lap five before over-rotating and nearly spinning on lap six; O’Neal settled for third, 1.051 seconds behind Howes.
