Davenport Speedway
24 hours later, Diercks wins at Davenport
From series and track reports
DAVENPORT, Iowa (July 22) — Marty Diercks of Bettendforf, Iowa, won his first career IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series victory at Davenport Speedway, but that wasn't decided until a day after the event. Diercks actually crossed the finish line behind Ray Guss Jr. at the quarter-mile oval, but Guss was stripped of the victory a night later at postrace tech following his July 23 victory at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa. | Slideshow
Diercks, of Bettendorf, Iowa, came through the pack to challenge late in the 50-lapper, running side-by-side with Guss before finishing just a car length behind. Justin Reed of Quincy, Ill., was elevated to second followed by Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Andy Nezworski of Buffalo, Iowa.
Reed drew his fourth pole start of the season and led the first two laps. Guss started third, passed Reed for the front spot the next time around the track, and was negotiating his way through the back of the field by lap 10. Matt Strassheim and Reed dueled well behind Guss, before a tangle with a lapped car knocked the second-running Strassheim from contention. Guss stayed in the bottom groove following a lap-43 caution while Diercks made his bid on the higher line, coming up just short at the checkers.
Notes: Todd Cooney moved up 16 spots for sixth place. ... Series points leader Boone McLaughlin took a provisional start, passed 15 cars and ended in eighth.
