Payne outruns Phillips for $3,000 victory at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Aug. 28) — Winning a race honoring his late sponsor, hometown driver Jeremy Payne fought off his car owner and teammate Terry Phillips at Springfield Raceway to win the John Kuntz Memorial. Payne earned $3,000 for the victory in a race sanctioned by the O'Reilly MARS DIRTcar Series and Allstate Dirt LateModel Racing Association. Kuntz, founder of Andy's Frozen Custards, died in January.
The polesitting Payne led all 40 laps and held off Phillips while Jack Sullivan of Greenbrier, Ark., was third. Steve Rushin of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and teammate Chris Jones rounded out the top five.
