GRANITE CITY, Ill. (Aug. 29) — Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., withstood several challengers for a $2,000 Northern Allstars victory at Tri-City Speedway. Erb took the lead for good from fast qualifier Rodney Melvin of Benton, Ill., on the 36th, then held off Billy Faust of Lebanon, Ill., and Melvin in the final stages of the 40-lapper.

Kevin Cole of Christopher, Ill., led the first seven laps before Erb took his first lead, but Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., took command on lap 10 and ran up front before a broken rear end at the midway point handed the lead back to Erb. But Erb lost the lead once again to a high-running Melvin after the midway point before rallying back for his 20th career series victory.
