Phillips edges Stovall in Fall Classic finale
From track reports
LEBANON, Mo. (Sept. 20) — Denying Jesse Stovall of weekend sweep, Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., earned $2,000 in the Fall Classic finale at I-44 Speedway for a $2,000 victory sanctioned by the O'Reilly MARS DIRTcar Series and Allstate Dirt LateModel Racing Association. Stovall, the Galena, Mo., driver who won Friday's opener, jumped into the early lead Saturday, but Phillips moved up to challenge on lap 11 as they swapped the lead twice. Phillips took the lead for good following a caution just before the midpoint of the 40-lapper as Stovall was left to settle for second.
Hometown driver Brandon McCormick was third with Chris Smyser of Lancaster, Mo., and Bill Frye of Greenbrier, Ark. rounding out the top five. Will Vaught of Crane, Mo., was among the frontrunners when he lost a right-rear wheel halfway through the race. Jeremy Payne, the winner's teammate, had engine problems in his heat race and drove LeRoy Johnson's car to an eighth-place finish in the main event.
