Payne tops Bodenhamer at Adrian for MLRA win

ADRIAN, Mo. (Sept. 25) — Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo., fought off Jason Bodenhamer of Centerview, Mo., in the closing laps at Adrian Speedway to capture the Al Bodenhamer Memorial, a race honoring the runner-up's late father. Payne earned $3,000 for his third victory of the season on the O'Reilly Midwest LateModel Racing Association. | Slideshow
John Anderson of Omaha, Neb., rallied to finish third ahead of former MLRA champion Terry Phillips of Springfield and Duke Whiseant of Texarkana, Ark. Five-time series champion Alan Vaughn of Belton, Mo., making his first start on the series since spring, dueled up front with Payne in the early laps before ending up 13th. Kelly Boen of Henderson, Colo., was running second midway through the race but got out of shape and collected Aaron Seabaugh following a lap-15 restart, knocking Boen from contention.
Notes: Payne's GRT Race Car has a Hatfield Race Engine and sponsorship from Andy's Frozen Custard. ... Payne's previous MLRA victory came May 7 at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan. ... Zack Simmons got upside down during preliminaries; he wasn't seriously injured. ... MLRA heads up to the road to Lakeside Speedway for a joint event with the World Dirt Racing League on Sept. 26-27. Friday's feature pays $2,500 to the winner while Saturday's action pays $5,000 to the winner.
