Hanson captures ABC's Red Clay Classic

(Sept. 27) — Surviving a near-spin early, Harry Hanson of Eveleth, Minn., recovered and took the lead from polesitter Mike Prochnow on the 15th lap and went on to capture the 50-lap Red Clay Classic at ABC Raceway. Hanson earned $4,000 for the WISSOTA-sanctioned victory, his first in ABC's season-ender. | Slideshow
Darrell Nelson of Hermanton, Minn., made a late charge before settling for second with Paul Brust of Rice Lake, Wis., in third. Canadian driver Danny Young of Thunder Bay, Ontario, was fourth and Prochnow, of Menomonie, Wis., finished fifth in the race slowed by a single caution for Pete Parker's turn-one spin just after Hanson's winning pass, which came in three-wide fashion as he and Prochnow put a lap on Tom Nesbitt.
Notes: Before the weekend's action, ABC Raceway honored retiring driver Tom Nesbitt of Thunder Bay, Ontario, who is completing his 50th season of racing. Four times Nesbitt won the Late Model portion of the Red Clay Classic (1982-84, '91). He left with a commemorative framed portrait from track personnel. ... Joey Jensen of Forest Lake, Minn., who finished seventh in the Late Model feature, won the modified main event. ... Mike Goodremote of Sand Creek, Wis., who finished 14th in the Late Model feature, flipped on the frontstretch in the modified race but climbed from the car uninjured after a few tense moments. ... The event drew 153 drivers including 39 Late Models.
