Miller grabs WDRL pole for finale at Davenport
From series reports
DAVENPORT, Iowa (Oct. 3) — Darren Miller of Milledgeville, Ill., made a clean sweep of preliminaries at Davenport Speedway's Governor's Cup to earn the pole position for the Oct. 4 feature event at the half-mile oval. The World Dirt Racing League 60-lapper will pay $10,000 to the winner at Davenport, the same track where Miller won the WDRL season opener on April 16.
Miller was Friday night's fastest qualifier among 25 cars, won his heat race and then captured the pole dash to guarantee him the best starting spot for Saturday's main event. Former WDRL champion Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., will start outside the front row while the rest of the top six positions will be filled by Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis., Matt Furman of Iowa City, Jason Utter of Columbus Junction, Iowa, and Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa.
Simpson is one point behind series points leader John Kaanta of Elk Mound, Wis., heading into the final series event. Kaanta finished fourth in his heat race and will start further back in the lineup.
