Smith tops Bray for victory at Friendship

ELKIN, N.C. (Oct. 16) — David Smith of Inman, S.C., overtook race-long leader Royce Bray of Hull, Ga., on a lap-18 restart at Friendship Motor Speedway and raced to a Fastrak Racing Series Grand Nationals victory. While Smith took the checkered flag first, Bray's second-place finish put him in position to collect $50,000 after the Grand Nationals finale Oct. 18 at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Va.
Bray is tied with Dick Barton of Ashville, N.Y., with 66 Grand Nationals points heading into the finale. Ed Dixon of Washington, Mo., has 61 points while Chris Steele of York, S.C., and Ron Parker of Lawndale, N.C., have 61 apiece.
Noel Tucker of Mount Airy, N.C., finished third at Friendship followed by Barton, Steele and Parker. Dixon's 10th-place finish was the best among winners of Grand Nationals prelims.
