Panhandleracing.comMILTON, Fla. (June 13) — Narrowly denied a victory the previous night, Shep Lucas of McKenzie, Ala., started on the pole Saturday at Southern Raceway and led all the way for a Mississippi State Championship Challenge victory. Lucas earned $2,000 for his second career MSCC victory, outrunning fellow front-row starter and former series champion David Ashley of Zachary, La.
Scott Slay of Clinton, Miss., was third while series points leader Chad Thrash of Meridian, Miss., and hometown driver Joseph Joiner — who earned a $250 bonus as the highest finishing driver using a crate engine — rounded out the top five.
Lucas was leading Friday's MSCC event at Northwest Florida Speedway late when Thrash overtook him in the final two laps, but at Southern, he notched his second career MSCC victory and first since June 24, 2006, at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Ala.
