Buckingham dries off Wythe with $3,000 victory
RURAL RETREAT, Va. (July 25) — Rain delayed the Fastrak Racing Series feature at Wythe Raceway, but it couldn't stop Shanon Buckingham of Morristown, Tenn., from racing to a $3,000 victory.
Hometown driver Brandon Umberger finished second in the 40-lapper followed by Lee Cooper of Greer, S.C., who posted his second straight third-place finish. David Smith of Inman, S.C., and Donald Bradsher of Burlington, N.C., rounded out the top five finishers on a night when rain hit at 9 p.m., pushing the feature to later in the night.

The victory is Buckingham's third special event Crate Late Model victory of 2009, including a $25,000 unsanctioned victory July 4 at Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe, Ala. ... An original crowd of about 1,500 filtered down to about 700 after the rainstorm. The track sold two-for-one hot dogs and hamburgers and held an autograph session during the delay. ... Chris Steele of York, S.C., rallied from his 18th starting spot to finish sixth. ... Fastrak Southern Region points leader Owen Osteen finished eighth. ... Upcoming for Fastrak competitors is a national touring event at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. The Aug. 1 feature pays $5,000 to the winner.
