Fourth-starting Madrid rolls to Canyon victory
PEORIA, Ariz. (Aug. 15) — Roaring into the lead from his fourth starting spot, Anthony Madrid of Phoenix, Ariz., led all the way at Canyon Speedway Park for his third career victory on the Southwest DIRTcar Racing Association. Madrid earned $1,000 for the victory.
R.C Whitwell of Tucson, Ariz., started outside the front row and held the second spot, but he couldn't keep up with Madrid. Five-time SWDRA champion Lonnie Parker Jr. of El Mirage, Ariz., involved in a lap-three pileup that involved several drivers, rallied from his ninth starting spot to finish third. Polesitter Bruce Duckett of Phoenix was fourth and Tucson's Brad Williams, also part of the lap-three accident on a restart, was fifth.
Notes: John Romero's heat race victory was his first-ever in the division. ... Joey Moriarty and Jeremy Thornton were both knocked out in the lap-three accident. ... In a schedule change, the season-ending event has been broadened to a two-race weekend on Nov. 6-7 at USA Raceway in Tucson, Ariz. Friday's event pays $1,000 to the winner with $2,000 going to Saturday's winner.
