Ashley grabs topless MSCC victory at Whynot

Whynot Motorsports ParkMERIDIAN, Miss. (Aug. 15) — David Ashley of Zachary, La., tightened the Mississippi State Champions Challenges points chase with a victory in the Topless 50 at Whynot Motorsports Park. The seventh-starting Ashley overtook polesitter Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., on the 31st lap and raced to a $2,500 victory, his second of the season on the MSCC circuit. | Slideshow
"We tried something different tonight," said Ashley, who survived late challenges. "The car just got faster as the race went on."
Chad Thrash of Collinsville, Miss., advanced three positions to finish second with 17th-starting Scott Dedwylder of Vossburg, Miss., rallying to finish third. Fast qualifier and hometown driver Jim McDuffie was fourth with 19th-starting Wiley Williams of Stonewall, Miss., rounding out the top five despite being a lap down. McCool dropped out with four laps remaining and was listed 13th.
Series points leader Scott Slay of Clinton, Miss., completed 30 laps and finished 16th but still holds a 35-point lead on Ashley, who moved into second over Thrash.

Three drivers advanced 14 positions in the feature: Scott Dedwylder, Wiley Williams and Tody Ratcliff (20th-to-sixth). ... Only four drivers completed 50 laps with half the 22-car field running at the finish. ... On Aug. 22 Whynot hosts the inaugural John Robert Lightsey Memorial, which includes a $1,000-to-win event for the track's weekly NeSmith Chevrolet Crate Late Models. ... MSCC competitors take a month break before Sept. 18-19 action at Northwest Florida Speedway in Blackman, Fla. The opener pays $2,000 to the winner with $4,400 going to the winner of the finale.
