Engine checks out, confirms victory for Wells
MUSKOGEE, Okla. (Aug. 14) — Although he had to wait three days until it was confirmed, 10th-starting Justin Wells of Aurora, Mo., earned his series-leading sixth victory of the season at Outlaw Motor Speedway. Wells collected $1,000 for the Race Brothers Show-Me Racin' Series victory, the 23rd of his career. He's won four of the last five series events.
Wells overtook fellow Aurora driver Jim Fulp on a lap-eight restart and led the remainder of the 30-lapper. Questions about the powerplant in the winning car delayed the official rundown, but series officials OK'd the engine the following Monday after a complete inspection.
Rex Merritt of Billings, Mo., finished second followed by Fulp and Ken Essary of Cape Fair, Mo., who started alongside Wells in the fifth row. Leslie Essary of Crane, Mo., the all-time series-leading driver with 24 victories, was fifth. Polesitter Scott Fry slipped back to finish 11th.
Notes: Wells drives a TNT Race Car sponsored by Top Notch Hardwood Flooring and Bentonville Plastics. ... The series is scheduled to return to the Muskogee track on Sept. 25. ... Next up for the series is a Sept. 5 event at West Plains (Mo.) Motor Speedway, where Wells won on June 13.
