Madrid overcomes Fincher for 4th SWDRA victory
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. (Sept. 19) — Sixth-starting Anthony Madrid of Phoenix, Ariz., overtook polesitter and race-long leader Jerry Fincher of Laveen, Ariz., after a lap-17 restart and led the rest of the 25-lapper at Prescott Valley Raceway for his third Southwest DIRTcar Racing Association victory in the last four series races.
The 24-year-old Madrid, who tied Lonnie Parker Jr. with four SWDRA victories in 2009, earned $1,000 for the triumph. Fincher settled for second with Keith Noyes of Tucson, Ariz., in third. Art Lacy of Casa Grande, Ariz., was fourth and 11th-starting Joey Moriarty of Phoenix rounded out the top five.
Parker, who started on the fifth row and spun on the sixth lap to draw the race's first caution, rallied back to finish sixth in the 16-car field.
Notes: Madrid has five career SWDRA victories. ... Madrid's two previous series victories came at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz., A lap-17 accident involved six drivers, but everyone was able to continue. ... Colorado driver Jason Davis made the long haul and won a heat race; he started outside the front row in the feature but faded to finish eighth. ... The series has three races remaining in 2009, all at USA Raceway in Tucson. The dates are Oct. 3, Nov. 6 and Nov. 7.
