Payne tops Looney at Larry Phillips Memorial
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Sept. 18) — Sixth-starting Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo., overtook Brad Looney of Republic, Mo., on Saturday at Springfield Raceway and grabbed a victory in the Larry Phillips Memorial. Payne earned a beautiful trophy and $3,000 for the event co-sanctioned by the MARS DIRTcar Racing Series and Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association.
Looney settled for second in the 40-lapper while Al Purkey of Coffeyville, Kan., crossed the line third. Eric Turner of Springfield and Brandon McCormick of Lebanon, Mo., rounded out the top five finishers at the quarter-mile oval. Looney took the MLRA points lead with his runner-up finish.
The race honored late short track legend Larry Phillips, the father of Payne's teammate, Terry Phillips, who finished 14th.
