Don O'Neal prepares for hot laps. (DirtonDirt.com) BRUNSWICK, Ga. (Jan. 31) — Rain washed out the sixth round of the Super Bowl of Racing IV at Golden Isles Speedway. Sprinkles developed just after time trials and developed into rain that forced officials to cancel the event.
Before the rain, three-race winner Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., set fast time with a 15.252-second lap at the sixth round of the Super Bowl of Racing IV, topping an event-high 62 entries in the O'Reily Southern All Star Series event. The rain wiped out what would've been a track record for Owens. Thursday's qualifying won't have any affect on the remaining two events. Two complete programs are scheduled for Friday and Saturday and, because of Thursday's rainout, both will be SAS points events.
The rainout is the third of the Super Bowl of Racing IV. Other rainouts came on Jan. 24 and Jan. 26.
Pre-race notes
The other divisions originally scheduled for action Thursday night were modifieds (with just 19 entered after carnage from the previous nights) and TQ Late Models (only seven are entered). ... The only new drivers at Thursday's event were John Blankenship of Williamson, W.Va., and Dale Hammond of Nichols, S.C., but Blankenship didn't qualify. ... Returning after suffering a back injury on Tuesday, Dan Schlieper was in action and was the fourth fastest qualifier. Michael Lloyd hot-lapped Schlieper's car the previous night in anticipation of driving the No. 9 if Schlieper wasn't able.
