Umberger takes Fastrak event at Volunteer
BULLS GAP, Tenn. (April 23) – Brandon Umberger of Rural Retreat, Va., moved by polesitter Jensen Ford of Piney Flats, Tenn., on lap 14 of Saturday night’s Fastrak Crate Late Model Series feature at Volunteer Speedway and led the remainder of the race to score a $2,000 victory.
Ford moved to the lead on the start of the 40-lap race, while Umberger moved from third to second. Ford held off Umberger’s initial challenges as Shanon Buckingham of Morristown, Tenn., began to move through the field from his 12th-starting position.
Umberger moved to the outside groove and used a strong run off of turn two to overtake Ford for the lead on lap 14. He never looked back after taking the top spot, leaving Buckingham and Ford to battle for the second position.
Buckingham moved by Ford late in the race and scored the runner-up finish. Ford finished third, with Bobby Mays of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Dale Ball of Johnson City, Tenn., rounding out the top five finishers.
Umberger leads Buckingham by four points in the series standings after two events. The series returns to action in late May with three events scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.
