McCool breaks through for Columbus victory
By Ben Shelton
Columbus SpeedwayCOLUMBUS, Miss. (Feb. 2) — Starting outside the front row, Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., jumped into the lead at Columbus Speedway's eighth annual Carl Hogan Honda Winter Classic and led all 40 laps of the unsanctioned Super Late Model event to earn $3,000.
“I’ve been wanting this one for a long time," said McCool, who captured his first feature event at Columbus after 16 years of racing. McCool was the fastest qualifier in his group and second quick overall to start outside the front row in the caution-plagued event. Riley Hickman of Ooltewah, Tenn., finished second followed by three Tennesseans: Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., polesitter Lamar Scoggins of Cleveland, Tenn., and Dane Dacus of Arlington, Tenn. Johnson won the Winter Classic's NesSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series event for crate engine Late Models.
Columbus hosts its regular season opener March 1 and follows that with the seventh annual Brown Engineering Rebel Challenge on March 7-8. On March 7, the Super Late Model field will be split in two groups to run for $1,500-to-win apiece, then the March 8 event will be a complete program with $7,000 going to the feature winner.
