Pencil halts Covert's series streak at Bedford
BEDFORD, Pa. (July 1) — Hometown driver Jack Pencil raced to victory Friday at Bedford Speedway for his third career triumph on the Three State Flyers touring circuit. Pencil earned $3,000 for his 28th career victory at Bedford.
Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., the two-time and defending series champion gunning for his fourth straight series victory, settled for second at the 5/8-mile oval while Dylan Yoder of Selinsgrove, Pa., was third. Scott LeBarron of Dover, Pa., and J.T. Spence of Winchester, Va., rounded out the top five in the first of two Fourth of July weekend events on the tour. Jeff Rine of Danville, Pa., started on the tail and rallied to finish seventh.
Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., started with Pencil on the front row and ran second until slowing to draw a lap-eight yellow. Thirteen of 19 starters were running at the checkers.
The series heads to Hesston (Pa.) Speedway on Sunday for a $5,000-to-win event co-sanctioned by the UFO Race Championship Series.
