Cook tops McDowell for $3,000 at Boyd's

(Aug. 5) — Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C., took the lead from race-long leader Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., with about 10 laps remaining Friday at Boyd's Speedway and grabbed his first victory of the season on the Southern Regional Racing Series. | Slideshow
Cook, who took second from polesitter Josh Putnam on the 17th lap in heading toward the front, earned his series-leading 13th career SRRS triumph, collecting $3,000.
McDowell, going for two straight victories after an unsanctioned triumph the previous night at nearby North Georgia Speedway, settled for second with the series-points-leading Putnam in third. Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., was fourth and William Thomas of Phenix City, Ala., rounded out the top five.
