David Smith gets $2,000 win at Cleveland County
LAWNDALE, N.C. (April 13) — David Smith of Inman, S.C., earned $2,000 Friday at Cleveland County Speedway for a victory on the Fastrak City Chevrolet Tour.
Furman Parton of Union Mills, N.C., was second followed by Brian Connor of Martinez, Ga., and Chris Ferguson of Mount Holly, N.C., who rallied after pitting for a flat tire while leading on lap 13.
“What a great race car. It felt good to be able to come out here and have such a good car and get our season started off on the right foot," Smith said. "I am sure glad that my car owner Stanley McCarter could be here after a week in the hospital. Hopefully this win will make him feel a little better.”
Smith kept an edge on Ferguson over the first nine laps, but Ferguson slipped ahead and soon struggled in trying to lap Heath Ellis. Ferguson made contact in getting past Ellis, and just as Smith disposed of the lapped car, Ferguson stopped with a flat right-rear tire. Parton moved up to second, but Smith's No. 11 TNT Race Car stayed in control the rest of the way to clinch the victory.
