Hill dominates Wythe for second straight on Ultimate tour

June 3, 2012, 6:38 am
From series and correspondent reports

RURAL RETREAT, Va. (June 2) — Vic Hill lowered the track record in time trials Saturday at Wythe Raceway, and he never slowed down the rest of the night in capturing his second straight victory on the Ultimate Super Late Model Series.

Coming off a flag-to-flag victory the previous weekend at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn., Hill duplicated that dominance at Wythe to collect $4,000. | Video

“I love this place up here. It’s a big racetrack and they keep it in great shape all the time. Once again, this Warrior Race Car with a Vic Hill Race Engine, I’m telling you it got to show off a little bit tonight,” said Hill, who said he was surprised he eclipsed Ray Cook’s record set last season. “It’s amazing. I never thought we’d have a track record. Hot-lapping, we didn’t get to run a complete lap, and we clocked Chris (Madden) and I knew he was real fast. When I went out to qualify, I just made up my mind I wasn’t going to let off much, if any.”

Hill lapped all but eight competitors in a race slowed by a single caution at the half-mile oval. Johnny Pursley of Clover, S.C., advanced eight positions to finish second, but he had nothing for Hill.

Kennie Compton Jr. of Bland, Va., was the top home-state finisher in third while Donald Bradsher of Burlington, N.C., and Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., rounded out the top five finishers.

Notes: Hill’s Warrior Race Car has a self-built engine with sponsorship from Landair Transport, Pilot Travel Centers, Preferred Sandblasting and American Racer Tires. ... Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., the all-time winningest Ultimate Series driver with six victories, scratched from the main event after a plume of smoke rose from his car during time trials. He was fifth quickest. ... Kenny Peeples Jr. won the Fastrak-sanctioned Crate Late Model feature, Wythe’s weekly division for Late Model-type cars. ... The next Super Late Model special at Wythe comes up June 23 with a visit from the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. ... The Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals make a July 16 visit to the track.
