NLRA champ Weiss outduels Balcaen at Devil's Lake
DOYON, N.D. (June 23) — Ricky Weiss, winning a back-and-forth battle with fellow Winnipeg, Manitoba, driver Mike Balcaen, took the lead for good on a lap-18 restart Saturday at Devil’s Lake Speedway and raced to a Northern LateModel Racing Association worth $1,100.
Weiss, the reigning NLRA champ, denied Balcaen, a four-time NLRA touring champion, his 200th career Late Model victory.
Brad Seng of Grand Forks, N.D., rallied from ninth to finish third while Tom Thompson of Brainerd, Minn., and Dustin Strand of Grand Forks rounded out the top five.
Notes: Weiss drives a Victory Circle Chassis sponsored by Derrick’s Sandblasting, Spectrum Coatings and Allied Roofing. ... Shane Edginton started 20th and finished ninth. ... Dave Smith of Edmonton, Alberta, has a career-best NLRA performance, winning a heat race and finishing 11th in the 22-car main event. ... NLRA drivers continue a busy stretch of racing Sunday with an $1,100-to-win event at Nodak Speedway in Minot, N.D.
