Selinsgrove Speedway

Well-traveled Dickson clicks off another $5,000

August 5, 2012, 4:16 pm
From track reports

SELINSGROVE, Pa. (Aug. 4) — Notching yet another $5,000 victory at yet another track, polesitter Nick Dickson of Lewistown, Pa., led flag-to-flag Saturday at Selinsgrove Speedway for his second career triumph in the Foss Jewelers Late Model Open. The 30-lap victory in the 14th running of the event was Dickson’s fourth win paying $5,000 at four different tracks.

The event was also a milestone for the half-mile oval. It was the 1,000th race won by a Late Model driver since the track reopened in 1963.

Dickson pulled into the lead at the drop of the green flag and as never headed, but the race wasn’t without a few suspenseful laps in traffic to decide the outcome.

On the second circuit, third-starting Dan Stone of Thompson, Pa., horsepowered his way past outside front-row starter Jeff Rine of Danville, Pa., to take second, while eighth-starting Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., and fifth-starting Jim Bernheisel of Lebanon, Pa., dueled for top-five positions.

The event’s first caution flag unfurled on lap five when Matt Cochran’s race car developed mechanical problems and rolled to a stop in turn four. When the race resumed, Stone kept Dickson in his sites for the next several laps. Meanwhile, Rine and Bernheisel raced wheel-to-wheel for the third position.

At the midway point, Dickson was leading Stone, Rine, Lathroum, fourth-starting Gregg Satterlee of Rochester Mills, Pa., and 12th-starting Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., a winner on the Three State Flyers circuit the previous night in Central City, Pa.

With only five laps remaining, Stone moved in striking distance of Dickson in heavy lapped traffic. Dickson managed to keep his car ahead of Stone’s for the remaining laps and posted a mere .49 of a second margin of victory over Stone, Rine, Covert and Satterlee.
