DAVENPORT, Iowa (May 17) — Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., tracked down leader Andy Eckrich of Oxford, Iowa, amid traffic on the 16th lap Saturday at Davenport Speedway and raced to his first career victory on the Corn Belt Clash circuit.

Feger earned $3,000 for his victory in the first race of the season on the half-mile oval at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds oval. | Photos

“It was tricky, I mean, you had to set guys up just right and take a chance and get ‘em in the right spot,” Feger told XSAN.tv about his victory. “At a track this big, it’s hard to follow somebody in the corner the way you need to because of the (aerodynamics) and braking points and stuff, but it was a lot of fun. I don’t get to do this (on a half-mile track) very often, so it was definitely a lot of fun.”

Andy Eckrich held off older brother Denny Eckrich of Oxford, Iowa, to get the runner-up spot while Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, Ill., was fourth. Justin Kay of Wheatland, Iowa, rounded out the top five finishers in the Karsyn’s Krusaders 40, the first-ever series event at Davenport.

Notes: Feger’s Pierce Race Car is powered by a Rhyne Competition Engine and sponsored by Cheap Cars, Pro Tire & Automotive, Griffin Sign Shop, Mulligan’s and Box Seat Productions. ... Feger notched his second victory of the season; he earned $5,000 for an April 26 victory at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway. ... Feger doesn’t typically compete in Corn Belt Clash action, but a three-month World Racing Group suspension has forced him to seek non-UMP DIRTcar events, the organization that sanctions most of the special events in his home state. ... The Karsyn's Krusaders 40 raised money for cancer awareness. ... Tom Darbyshire of Morning Sun, Iowa, was victorious in the IMCA Late Model portion of the program, racing to victory over Andy Nezworski and Nate Beuseling. ... Corn Belt Clash competitors take six weeks off before returning to action June 28-29 at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb. and Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa.
