Dedwylder claims Whynot's NeSmith race

NeSmith Dirt Late Model SeriesMERIDIAN, Miss. (May 25) — Scott Dedwylder of Vossburg, Miss., gave his young car owner who has been going through some serious medical issues a reason to smile Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park.
Dedwylder, who is filling in behind the wheel of the No. 38 machine of 2012 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Champion Chase Washington of Houlka, Miss., while Washington undergoes chemotherapy, drove to a $2,000 victory in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series’ Salute To The Navy 40 at Whynot’s quarter-mile oval.
“This a special win for me because I can help out Chase and win with his car in front of my hometown fans,” said Dedwylder, whose victory came in the second leg of NeSmith’s tripleheader weekend in the Magnolia State. “When Chase and his crew chief Joel Murphree asked me to drive this car, all I had to do is get in it, and it is a joy to drive.”
There were several challengers for Dedwylder to deal with over the 40-lap race. Kyle Bronson of Brandon, Fla., was able to take the lead for one lap. Points leader Ronny Lee Hollingsworth of Northport, Ala., made a bid for the lead, and hometown driver Rodney Wing challenged Dedwylder late in the race.
But in the end, the high-riding Vossburg Vandal was able to keep them all behind him and post the $2,000 win. Wing finished second, and Bronson drove to a third-place finish. Two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Jim McDuffie of Meridian, MS was fourth, while Shep Lucas of McKenzie, Ala., advanced from his 21st starting spot to round out the race’s top five finishers.
Hollingsworth, who won his fourth race in six series events in NeSmith’s event Friday at Hattiesburg (Miss.) Motorsports Park, faded late in Saturday’s race and took the sixth spot to retain the series points lead.
