Johnson tops Chilton for $3,000 at Richmond
RICHMOND, Ky. (May 25) — Rallying from the 11th starting spot, Greg Johnson of Bedford, Ind., scored a $3,000 victory during Saturday night’s Rain Dodger 40 at Richmond Raceway.
Michael Chilton of Salvisa, Ky., was second in the unsanctioned special for Richmond’s Coyote 100.7 Super Late Models division, followed by Jason Barrett of Waco, Ky., in third. Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, Ind., grabbed the lead on the start of the 40-lap main event and held a commanding lead getting bottled up in slower traffic on lap 21. That allowed the second- and third-place duo of Aaron Hatton and Chilton to chase down race leader.
As the field completed lap 26, action heated up as the front trio would make contact with each other amid lapped traffic on the front straightaway, resulting in Hatton slowing in turn two and drawing a caution flag as he retired for the night.
While under caution, race leader Jewell would also pull pitside with a flat left-rear tire, ending his run as well.
The turn of events gave the lead to Chilton. But he wasn’t safe for long as Johnson would began to pressure the new leader on the ensuing restart.
Johnson worked under Chilton exiting turn four to take the race lead on lap 27 and never looked back. He pulled away over the remaining laps of the event to take the victory.
