Cook capitalizes for North Georgia victory

DirtonDirt.com correspondentCHATSWORTH, Ga. (May 16) — Taking the lead on the last lap when Dale McDowell got into the wall, Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C., earned an unsanctioned $2,000 victory at North Georgia Speedway. McDowell led more than 39 laps of the feature event, but when he broke a right-front spring going into turn three on the final lap, Cook took over.
McDowell hit the wall in turns three and four, but he was able to nurse his car home in fourth. Jake Knowles of Tyrone, Ga., finished second ahead of Brian Hickman of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., McDowell of Rossville, Ga., and Ivedent Lloyd Jr. of Ocala, Fla. The event drew 27 Super Late Models.
If Cook can win Saturday's O'Reilly Southern All Star event at Cleveland (Tenn.) Speedway, he'll receive $5,000 plus a $1,000 bonus for a North Georgia-Cleveland sweep at the Monty Morrow-promoted ovals.
Correction: An earlier version of this story said McDowell broke a shock; it was a spring.
