ALMS-ruling Pierce gets first Quincy victory
QUINCY, Ill. (Aug. 11) — Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., earned $2,000 Sunday at Quincy Raceway for a 40-lap victory on the Sunoco American Late Model Series, his first feature win at the third-mile oval.
The pole-starting Pierce led all the way, fighting off an early challenge from Denny Woodworth of Mendon, Ill., and keeping Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., in check the rest of the way for the victory. | Slideshow
Sheppard, winner of last week’s regular-season feature at Quincy, settled for second with Jason Perry of Payson, Ill., in third. Woodworth was fourth and hometown driver Rickey Frankel rounded out the top five in the 17-car field.
Notes: Pierce’s Pierce Race Car has a Pro Power Racing engine and sponsorship from Champion Spark Plugs, Murphy Trucking, Petersen Aluminum, American Metal Supply Co. and Keyser Mfg. ... Pierce is the 17th Late Model winner at Quincy since the track switched to UMP DIRTcar sanctioning in 2012. ... Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., who won ALMS features earlier in the weekend at Kankakee and Fairbury, wasn’t entered. ... ALMS competitors return to action Aug. 17 at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, Ind., for a $2,000-to-win event.
