KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Sept. 27) — Blog-style updates of Friday’s action on the second of three nights of racing at the 10th annual Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (preliminary results unofficial; watch live pay-per-view; complete Knoxville coverage):

10:29 p.m. | Richards wins again

KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Sept. 27) — Setting up a chance to match Billy Moyer’s 2010 sweep, Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., dominated Friday’s 25-lap preliminary feature at Knoxville Raceway’s 10th annual Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals.

The sixth-starting Richards became just the second driver to sweep Thursday-Friday preliminary features as he blew past A.J. Diemel in turn one on the ninth lap and rolled to a dominating victory at the historic half-mile oval.

A lap-20 caution erased a nearly half-track advantage for Richards, but runner-up Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., couldn’t keep up and finished 1.993 seconds back at the checkers.

Diemel, the Elk Mound, Wis., driver who led four laps early to match Owens, was a distant third while polesitter Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., was fourth. Tim McCreadie rallied from his 11th-row starting spot to round out the top five.

The first five laps were slowed by three cautions. Fourth-running Dale McDowell blew a right-rear tire and retired.

On the sixth lap, Darrell Lanigan spun between turns one and two with most everyone missing him, then Lanigan drove the wrong way on the caution period to express his displeasure with Richards just past the flagstand.

On the next restart, Owens, failed to come up to speed and Billy Moyer made contact, triggering a slowdown the cause a multicar contact in turn one. Chad Simpson got the worst of it and his car was towed off the track.

A final caution appeared on the 20th lap when Chris Simpson slowed with a flat tire in turn two.

9:40 p.m. | Post heat notes

Earl Pearson Jr. is on the pole for the main event with Jimmy Owens alongside. ... Thursday’s winner Josh Richards starts sixth. ... Darrell Lanigan, most impressive in heat action, starts eighth. ... John Blankenship had to go to a backup car for the B-main after dropping a cylinder in his heat race. He said the team would likely swap motors so he could stick with his primary car in Saturday’s action. ... Matt Furman blamed himself for losing the lead to Ryan Unzicker in his heat race. “What I should have donw is stayed with what I did the first eight laps,” said Furman, who was fighting a tight-handling car. “I really wanted to win that heat."

8:41 p.m. | Babb wins sixth heat

Shannon Babb won the sixth heat, but it was Josh Richards making the noise in the 12-lapper. With Babb out front, Richards made a thrilling fifth-to-second move on the frontstretch after an early restart as the seventh starter left foes in his dust on the second lap. He split Jimmy Owens and polesitter Billy Moyer Jr. exiting turn two before going by Andy Eckrich entering turn one. Richards couldn't quite track down Babb while Owens got the third and final transfer spot. Moyer Jr. was sixth and outside front-row starter Spencer Diercks got a poor start and was sixth after one lap. The first start was called back and lap-two caution appeared for Chris Spieker's disabled car.

SIxth heat finish: Shannon Babb, Josh Richards, Jimmy Owens, Andy Eckrich, Don O'Neal, Billy Moyer Jr., Jay Johnson, Spencer Dierkcs, Ray Sveeggen, Kent Robinson, Chris Spieker.

8:36 p.m. | Lanigan wins fifth heat

The first driver of the weekend to fully overcome the eight-car heat race inversion, Darrell Lanigan slipped by polesitter Eddie Carrier Jr. at halfway and cruised to victory in the 12-lap prelim. Carrier held on to finish second over fifth-starting Dale McDowell as the top three transferred to the night's 25-lap feature. Chad Simpson ran second early but ended up fourth. Two cautions flew. The first appeared on the seventh lap for Shirley and another for Dennis Vandermeersch on lap 10.

Fifth heat finish: Darrell Lanigan, Eddie Carrier Jr., Dale McDowell, Chad Simpson, Brandon Sheppard, Brian Birkhofer, Jared Landers, Jason Jaggers, Ray Guss Jr., Steve Lance Jr., Brian Shirley, Dennis Vandermeersch.

8:28 p.m. | Unzicker wins fourth heat

Winning a race-long duel with fellow front-row starter Matt Furman, Ryan Unzicker led the final four laps of the fourth heat. Furman slipped to third behind Billy Moyer in the final laps — and made a daring frontstretch move to keep Tim McCreadie in check late to hold onto the final transfer spot. McCreadie, needing a big night after struggling Thursday, was fourth ahead of John Blankenship and Mike Marlar, who started ninth and ran as high as fourth. Dustin Walker spun in turn two to draw a lap-two yellow.

Fourth heat finish: Ryan Unzicker, Billy Moyer, Matt Furman, Tim McCreadie, John Blankenship, Mike Marlar, Dennis Erb Jr., Terry Phillips, Jason McBride, Tyler Bruening, Dustin Walker, Joel Callahan.

8:20 p.m. | Chris Simpson wins third heat

With Rodney Sanders losing the lead on the late restart, fifth-starting Chris Simpson took the victory over the eighth-starting Scott Bloomquist as Sanders dropped to the third and final transfer spot in the two-lap shootout. Sanders took the lead from RIch Bell on the second lap, but a lap-11 caution for Denny Eckrich reset the field. Sanders fell victim to both Simpson and Bloomquist while Bell was fourth. Polesitter Mike Fryer faded early and finished seventh.

Third heat finish: Chris Simpson, Scott Bloomquist, Rodney Sanders, Rich Bell, Justin Kay, Austin Hubbard, Mike Fryer, Skip Frey, Dave Eckrich, Curt Schroeder, Denny Eckrich.

8:15 p.m. | Francis wins second heat

Steve Francis led all the way from outside the front row, building a straightaway lead after five laps and cruising the rest of the way. Seventh-starting A.J. Diemel moved quickly to the front and took second from Morgan Bagley early in the caution-free affair, and nearly tracked Francis down in finishing in the second spot, transferring along with Earl Pearson Jr., who overtook Bagley on the eighth lap. Bagley ended up fourth.

Second heat finish: Steve Francis, A.J. Diemel, Earl Pearson Jr., Morgan Bagley, Tim Isenberg, Jason Utter, Tony Jackson Jr., Tim Lance, Travis Dickes, Darrel DeFrance, Greg Kimmons, Stew Hayward.

8:08 p.m. | Brady Smith wins first heat

Fourth-starting Brady Smith overtook outside front-row starter Jason Feger on the fourth lap and led the rest of the 12-lap prelim. He took the checkers a straightaway ahead of Feger, who barely held off seventh-starting Jimmy Mars. The top three transferred to the main event while Ricky Weiss was fourth ahead of Ryan Gustin, the night's fast qualifier. The first start was called off because of a poor start, and the second start was halted on the first lap when Frank Heckenast Jr. got into the turn-two fence near the spot that ended his run in Thursday's 25-lap preliminary feature.

First heat finish: Brady Smith, Jason Feger, Jimmy Mars, Ricky Weiss, Ryan Gustin, Chase Junghans, Bub McCool, Jason Rauen, Jonathan Brauns, Charlie McKenna, Michael Smith. Frank Heckenast Jr.

Jason Jaggers of Wyanet, Ill., broke an engine in Thursday’s hot laps and has swapped engines for Friday’s action. Jaggers has five victories in 2013, including a career-high $5,000 payday at Moler Raceway Park in Williamsburg, Ohio. ... Among drivers serving as crew members: Terry Casey (helping Ricky Weiss), Jon Henry (helping Frank Heckenast Jr.) and John Anderson (helping Shop Quik Racing teammate Chase Junghans). ... Michael Smith of Vienna, W.Va., the 1984 STARS Rookie of the Year, is making one of his few 2013 starts at Knoxville in his Kryptonite Race Car with plans to race more extensively next season. ... Dustin Walker of Peculiar, Mo., is driving a Rocket Chassis recently purchased from fellow Missouri driver Justin Asplin; it still carries Asplin's graphics scheme and No. 77 (Walker usually drives No. 14w). ... Four cars are on the track at a time during time trials.

6:43 p.m. | Callahans highs, lows

Joel Callahan of Dubuque, Iowa, made a late pass in his Thursday heat race win grab a preliminary victory at Knoxville, putting him in the 25-lap feature.

But things went south from there as the 49-year-old driver, in his ninth year of Late Model racing, was in the middle of pileup in turns three and four that also involved Eddie Carrier Jr., Jimmy Owens and Dennis Erb Jr. Callahan, Owens and Erb ended up going to backup cars for Friday’s action.

Callahan’s Pierce Race Car No. 40 was pushed far away from his hauler without an engine as Callahan’s team swapped his lone open-competition powerplant into his Victory Circle Chassis.

“It was kind of a shame because it tore a lot of stuff up,” said Callahan, the 2013 track champ at Dubuque and Farley Speedways.

6:38 p.m. | Feger likes Iowa half-miles

Jason Feger cut his teeth on Illinois bullrings, but he’s found success on the bigger half-mile tracks this season, partly because of a World Racing Group suspension that prevented him from running his home tracks in 2013.

Feger ended up running several Corn Belt Clash events, winning on Davenport (Iowa) Speedway’s half-mile, and adding a Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series at Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa. He kept up that roll Friday at Knoxville with a third-place finish in the preliminary feature, his best-ever performance at the historic track.

“We’ve went to a lot of bigger tracks this year,” Feger said. “I haven’t been on many big, flat tracks, and this year we’ve been to quite a few of 'em, and just gotten a lot better on our program like that. I think I have more confidence coming here than I’ve had in the past. I think it showed tonight.

“This place was a lot of luck, too. It’s hard to qualify good and then battle up through there with as many goods cars as here. They keep inverting you and inverting, so it’s tough when you got this many good cars and the track is this fast.”

6:20 p.m. | 70 entries Friday

Seventy cars, two fewer than Thursday, are entered for Friday’s action at Knoxville, where a complete racing program will be capped by a $7,000-to-win main event (Brian Harris and Jesse Stovall are the two drivers missing from Thursday). Drivers will be trying to improve on their point totals from Thursday’s program that set up Saturday’s starting lineup for the $40,000-to-win finale.
