Horton outduels Wilmoth, bags Tyler County bounty
From track reports
MIDDLEBOURNE, W.Va. (June 7) — Snapping Paul Wilmoth Jr.'s five-race win streak, Doug Horton of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., doubled his winning purse at Tyler County Speedway by capturing a $1,000 bounty on a driver who was undefeated at the track in 2008. Horton wrestled the lead from Wilmoth after a tight battle in the first half of the race before securing the unsanctioned victory.
"We were asked if we had come to win the bounty," Horton said. "Truth is we came to race, and ended up outrunning one of the best Late Model drivers in the eastern U.S."
The feature in the Midcap Land & Timber-sponsored division started with Wilmoth out front and Horton on his rear deck. Wilmoth's lap-four bobble opened the door and the pair battled side-by-side until the eighth lap, when Horton was able to squeeze into the lead amid traffic. The frontrunners swapped the lead three more times before Horton finally took control, and Wilmoth nearly spun while making his low-side charges near the race's midpoint.
Horton had a full-straightaway lead at one point but Wilmoth charged back into contention and a lap-21 caution reset the field. Horton outran Wilmoth in a four-lap sprint the checkered flag for the victory. in his No. 46 Rocket Chassis sponsored by Yowlers Mobile Home Service and Bobby Lake Motorsports. Scott Irvin finished third with Butch McGill and Richard Frazier rounding out the top five.
In the evening's Crate feature, Sonny Conley held off Shane Hitt for his second win of the season.
