ELMA, Wash. (June 21) — Rob Mayea of Bend, Ore., took the lead from John Duty on the 28th lap and went on to win the opening Hoosier I-5 Challenge Series event of the season at Grays Harbor Raceway. Duty, of Portland, Ore., settled for second in the 50-lapper despite his dazzling fourth-to-first move on the 19th lap. Greg Walters of Banks, Ore., finished third and early leaders Lisa Stroup and Todd Shandy finished out of the top five.

Mayea started seventh and was among the trio of cars Duty eclipsed on the 19th lap. Mayea took third from Mike Miller and then second from Shandy by lap 23 and restarted behind Duty following a lap-26 caution. On the restart, Mayea sized up Duty and made the winning move on the high side in turn three to lead lap 28.

Notes: Mayea won the last series event at the track in 2005. ... Three-time and reigning series champion Trevor Glaser missed the race because he was attending his sister's wedding, but John Duty was running on behalf of Glaser for series points. ... Casey Vitale shattered the track qualifying record with a lap of 14.310 seconds. ... Jeff Biffle, who finished 10th, earned a $200 bonus as the top finishing driver using a Crate engine. ... The series next runs July 26 at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore.
