Madrid takes Manzanita, ends Parker hot streak

(June 28) — Capitalizing on a lap-22 bobble by Randy Carder, substitute driver Anthony Madrid of Phoenix took control at Manzanita Speedway and raced to his first victory on the Southwest DIRTcar Late Model Series. The ninth-starting Madrid, a regular in Arizona modified racing, took the wheel of the No. 95 normally driven by Mark Fowler, who was on a business trip. He earned $2,000 in the first series event at Manzanita in four years.
The polesitting Carder, who raced the last half of the race without power steering, finished more than a straightaway behind in second while Joey Moriarty was third in the 30-lapper. Keith Noyes, driving his father Wayne's regular ride, was fourth and tail-starting Brad Williams rallied to finish fifth. Madrid's victory ended the six-race series winning streak of Lonnie Parker Jr., who was running in the top five before dropping out with mechanical problems on the 12th lap. The feature was marred by Lee Hoy's flipping wreck in turn three after contact with Wes Hall's car. Hoy wasn't injured.
Notes: Besides Madrid driving the Fowler car and Noyes in his father's car, Jason Noll was behind the wheel of the car normally driven by Keith McKinney, and Jerry Fincher piloted Randy Carder's Crate engine car. ... Art Lacy, Troy Ruebke, Jeff Stafford and Lee Hoy were among drivers on hand, all after time away from the track. ... The next series event is scheduled for July 5 at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz.
