Friday rain cuts DTWC to one-day event; 92 cars

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Oct. 19) — Friday afternoon drizzles that carried into the evening at Portsmouth Raceway Park rained out action on the opening night of the 32nd annual Red Buck Dirt Track World Championship. Saturday’s drivers’ meeting is set for 12:30 p.m. with hot laps scheduled for 1 p.m. Time trials and heat races for the 92 entrants will follow. After an intermission, Saturday’s program will be run as regularly scheduled with Late Model consolation races beginning at 7 p.m. followed by the modified feature, 100-lap Late Model feature and non-qualifiers’ race.
Drizzly rain began Friday afternoon and persisted into the evening. Track workers abandoned work on the track surface in the early evening and officials postponed the event about 7:15 p.m.
The event, held for the first at the 3/8-mile oval on the Ohio River, serves as the finale on the Lucas Oil Series.
Race notes: Additional drivers can enter the event through 12:30 p.m. Saturday. ... Temperatures dipped into the lower 50s late Friday afternoon. ... The huge turnout of more than 300 RVs and campers turned out for the event. ... DTWC’s modified program began Thursday night with 97 cars in action for heats and consolation races. Ben Adkins and Rick Aukland, both former DTWC starters in Late Model action, are scheduled to start on the front row of Saturday evening’s modified feature. ...
