ROSSBURG, Ohio (Sept. 5) — Action Thursday for the first of three nights of action at Eldora Speedway's 43rd annual; the program includes twin $5,000-to-win features after the odd and even qualifiers are split from a 112-car field (finishes unofficial; complete World 100 coverage):

Even feature

Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., the 2008 World 100 winner, stole the lead from Dustin Neat of Dunnville, Ky., on a lap-seven restart and captured a 25-lap victory in Thursday’s preliminary feature for even-numbered qualifiers.

Clanton zipped past Neat on the double-file restart, stretched his margin to a half-straightaway at halfway, then survived challenges from Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa, and 16th-starting Tyler Reddick of Corning, Calif., on a lap-18 restart en route to his $5,000 payday.

Birkhofer tried to sneak past on the low side with seven laps remaining, but Clanton remained true to the high-groove line that had been so good to him in reaffirming control and keeping Birkhofer and Reddick behind him.

Birkhofer finished five lengths back with the charging Reddick in third followed by Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., and Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill.

After leading the first seven lap, Neat fell from second to fourth on the 16th lap, then lost another spot when he tangled with Weiss in turn four. Two laps later Neat slowed with apparent mechanical problems and retired.

Polesitter Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis., slipped out of the top five in the early going and pulled to the pits during a lap-seven yellow.

Besides the lap-18 caution for Neat, three other yellows slowed the action. The first was for debris scattered at the top of the backstretch on lap three, then another appeared on lap seven when Randy Korte shredded a left-rear tire. A caution on lap 18 flew when officials called back the restart.

Finish: (1) Shane Clanton, (2) Brian Birkhofer, (3) Tyler Reddick, (4) Chris Madden, (5) Brandon Sheppard, (6) John Blankenship, (7) Dale McDowell, (8) Don O’Neal, (9) Jonathan Davenport, (10) Shannon Babb, (11) Josh Richards, (12) Brad Neat, (13) Michael Chilton, (14) Duane Chamberlain, (15) Chad Ruhlman, (16) Donnie Moran, (17) Scott Bloomquist, (18) Dustin Neat, (19) Dustin Linville. (20) Jimmy Owens, (21) Billy Moyer (22) Kent Robinson, (23) Jimmy Mars, (24) Randy Korte.

Odd feature

Avoiding the wall — something he hasn’t always done during Eldora’s biggest weekends — Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., led all 25 laps Thursday in the opening feature of the weekend.

The third-starting Van Wormer, who famously whacked the wall multiple times while battling for the lead in the 2006 World 100, kept a firm grip on the lead despite battling lapped traffic the second half of the 25-lap feature, which lasted just seven and a half minutes in running caution-free.

Van Wormer had a few anxious moments, including on the 12th lap when he eased passed the slower Justin Rattliff and saw his half-straightaway lead cut to 15 lengths, then again on the 20th lap when Van Wormer considered ducking under the slower car of Jerry Bowersock, anxiously pinching his car enough to allow runner-up Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., to move up on his rear deck.

But Van Wormer kept McCool in check the final five laps for the $5,000 victory, the first of four preliminary features heading to Saturday’s $46,000-to-win finale in Dirt Late Model racing most prestigious event.

McCool, third-finishing Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., fourth-place finisher Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., and Matt Miller of Whitehouse, Ohio, were nearly nose-to-tail with just five laps remaining in trying to chase down Van Wormer.

R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, held the third spot early but slipped back to finish in a race where 21 of 24 starters compeleted every lap.

Finish: (1) Jeep Van Wormer, (2) Bub McCool, (3) Tim McCreadie, (4) Darrell Lanigan, (5) Matt Miller, (6) R.J. Conley, (7) Gregg Satterlee, (8) Jason Feger, (9) Andrew Reaume, (10) Eddie Carrier Jr., (11) Terry Phillips, (12) Mike Marlar, (13) Greg Johnson, (14) Casey Roberts, (15) Ricky Weiss, (16) Jared Landers, (17) Steve Francis, (18) Randy Weaver, (19) Bobby Pierce, (20) Jacob Hawkins, (21) Jerry Bowersock, (22) Dennis Erb Jr. (23) Justin Rattliff, (24) Tim Rivers.

Third even consolation

Third-starting Shannon Babb jumped into the lead immediately and cruised to a victory in the final consy. He transferred to the main event along with Dustin Linville. Morgan Bagley finished third, one spot out of transferring.

Finish: Shannon Babb, Dustin Linville, Morgan Bagley, Jody Knowles, Brett Wyatt, Ray Guss Jr., Don Gordon, Shane Unger.

Third odd consolation

Jacob Hawkins emerged from a three-wide battle with Tim Rivers and Brandon Kinzer early to grab a 10-lap victory. Rivers got the second and final transfer spot, finishing more than a straightaway behind, while Kinzer faded. The first start was scrapped when front-row starters Michael Asberry and Hawkins tangled coming to green, spinning Asberry around with Joe Ramey and Mason Combs part of the mess. Asberry suffered front-end damage and made a single lap after restarting on the tail.

Finish: Jacob Hawkins, Tim Rivers, Phil Austra, Brandon Kinzer, Chad Smith, Vic Hill, Matt Irey, Brad Dyer, Joe Ramey, Michael Asberry, Mason Combs.

Second even consolation

Jimmy Owens pulled away from an early duel with Scott Bloomquist for a victory. Both transferred to the main event while Jeff Babcock finished third. Jeff Wolfenbarger retired mid-race.

Finish: Jimmy Owens, Scott Bloomquist, Jeff Babcock, Frank Heckenast Jr., Jason Montgomery, Chris Simpson, John Mason, J.R. Hotovy, Jason Smith, Steve Kester, Jay Brunson, Jeff Wolfenbarger.

Second odd consolation

Mike Marlar led all the way from the pole position for a victory while Justin Rattliff and Earl Pearson Jr. battle for the second spot throughout the 10-lapper. Rattliff edged Pearson by a car length at the checkers to transfer to the main.

Finish: Mike Marlar, Justin Rattliff, Earl Pearson Jr., Brian Ruhlman, Brian Diveley, Jeff Watson, Tim Isenberg, Jeff Sloan, Jay Johnson, John Mayes Jr., Jeremy Nichols. Scratched: Scott James

First even consolation

Outside front-row starter Jonathan Davenport led all the way, transferring to the main event along with Josh Richards. Richards and Chad Simpson swapped slide jobs early, coming together exiting turn two when Simpson regained the spot, but Simpson fell a straightaway behind in finshing third.

Finish: Jonathan Davenport, Josh Richards, Chad Simpson, Mike Spatola, Doug Drown, Jon Henry, Tim Manville, Devin Moran, Ryahn VanderVeen, SHannon Thornsberry, Gary Christian, Scott Clifford, Steve Lance Jr. Scratched: Doug Zartler.

First odd consolation

Jerry Bowersock won from outside the front row as he and polesitter Bobby Pierce transferred to the main. Mason Zeigler was third but never seriously contended for a transfer spot. The lone caution appeared on the third lap for debris from Ky Harper's machine; he had to restart on the tail.

Finish: Jerry Bowersock, Bobby Pierce, Mason Zeigler, Ryan Sutter, Tim Lance, Henry Cooper, Robby Hensley, Justin Chance, Brian Gray, Jim Gingery, Casey Noonan, Ky Harper, Chub Frank. Scratched: Steve Isenberg.

Heat race notes

Scott Bloomquist accepted his heat race penalty without complaint; he had to start on the tail because he changed tires after going through tech. “These nights are all about trying some things, and that’s what I wanted to do,” said Bloomquist, who rallied from the tail of his heat to finish fourth after being penalized for changing a tire after arriving in the staging area. “I got to the grid and decided I wanted to try something different on tires, so that’s what we did. You don’t get many chances to try things here, so that’s what we did.” ... Josh Richards isn't overly concerned about his fifth-place heat race finish. “Everybody just got strung out there really quick and got in a line,” Richards said. “After that, I really just didn’t want to push the issue. We’re just trying some different things tonight.” ... Casey Roberts was glad to see track crews watering the track before his heat race. “That wet with traction is right up my alley,” said Roberts, who charged from fifth to win the first odd heat and earn the pole for the odd feature. “I hope they keep wetting it so it don’t get too slick come feature time. We’re not too good in the slick, but if it is slick, maybe we can learn something to get better in it.” ... While Roberts is worried about a slick surface, Jeep Van Wormer is worried about it taking rubber. “Those last few heats, it really started to rubber-up in the top,” said Van Wormer, who’ll start fourth in the odd feature. “It’ll probably be pretty tough to pass out there.”

Sixth even heat

Jimmy Mars, winless in 2013, started on the pole and led all the way, fighting off an early challenge from third-starting Brad Neat. Neat was a solid second all the way while Duane Chamberlain was far behind in third, but good enough to transfer to the main event. Brian Shirley was fourth and has his hands full with Morgan Bagley throughout the race that went without a yellow flag.

Finish: Jimmy Mars, Brad Neat, Duane Chamberlain, Brian Shirley, Morgan Bagley, Brett Wyatt, Nick Latham, Ray Guss Jr.

Sixth odd heat

In another caution-free heat. polesitter Bub McCool cruised to victory. All the competitors fanned out with little passing after the first lap as fourth-starting Jared Landers was second and Dennis Erb Jr. got the final transfer spot. Jacob Hawkins pressured Erb several times but settled for fourth.

Finish: Bub McCool, Jared Landers, Dennis Erb Jr., Jacob Hawkins, Chad Smith, Vic Hill, Joe Ramey, Brad Dyer, Matt Irey.

Fifth even heat

Polesitter Dustin Neat led all the way, staying ahead of an early fray in his eight-lap victory. Billy Moyer nearly slipped back to fifth early, but fought back to finish second ahead of Dale McDowell, who started fifth and nosed briefly into second early in the race. All three transferred to the main event while front-row starter Dustin Linville settled for fourth.

Finish: Dustin Neat, Billy Moyer, Dale McDowell, Dustin Linville, Shannon Babb, Kevin Weaver, Jody Knowles, Don Gordon, Shane Unger.

Fifth odd heat

Polesitter Terry Phillips outhustled fellow front-row starter Jason Feger on the high side for a victory. Feger stayed in touch with Phillips but never made a serious challenge while fifth-starting Eddie Carrier Jr., up to third early, was further back in the third and final transfer spot. Michael Asberry hung gamely in fourth but couldn't keep up with the top three in the caution-free prelim.

Finish: Terry Phillips, Jason Feger, Eddie Carrier Jr., Michael Asberry, Brandon Kinzer, Tim Rivers, Phil Ausra, Jason Riggs, Mason Combs.

Fourth even heat

Polesitter Brandon Sheppard, avoiding a near disaster when he got too high in turns three and four on the four laps, ironed things out and cruised to an eight-lap victory. Fifth-starting John Blankenship got the second spot, running in that position most of the way, while Tyler Reddick got the third and final transfer spot. Scott Bloomquist, scheduled to start outside the front row, had to start on the tail because he changed tires after going through pre-race tech. He rallied to nearly catch Reddick but settled for fourth.

Finish: Brandon Sheppard, John Blankenship, Tyler Reddick, Scott Bloomquist, John Mason, Chris Simpson, J.R. Hotovy, Steve Kester, Jay Burnson.

Fourth odd heat

Third-starting Jeep Van Wormer blew past front-row starters Justin Rattliff and Gregg Satterlee at the outset and cruised to victory. Satterlee ran a distant second throughout the race while fourth-starting Randy Weaver moved up to finish in the third and final transfer spot. Ratfliff was more than a quarter-lap behind Van Wormer at halfway and ended up a distant fourth in the cacution-free prelim.

Finish: Jeep Van Wormer, Gregg Satterlee, Randy Weaver, Justin Rattliff, Brian Ruhlman, Jay Johnson, Tim Isenberg, Jeremy Nichols, Jeff Sloan.

Third even heat

Amid a tough field, polesitter Brian Birkhofer, last year's World 100 winner, controled the entire race, edging away from fellow front-row starter Don O'Neal for a victory. O'Neal got the second spot while fifth-starting Donnie Moran held off challenges from Jimmy Owens for the third and final transfer spot. Owens, who lost ground when Jeff Babcock squeezed him on the backstretch early, was the only driver who wasn't right up against the fence in settling for fourth. The race went caution-free.

Finish: Brian Birkhofer, Don O'Neal, Donnie Moran, Jimmy Owens, Jeff Babcock, Jason Montgomery, Frank Heckenast Jr., Jason Smith, Jeff Wolfenbarger.

Third odd heat

Third-starting Matt Miller, a two-time preliminary feature winner at the Dream, ducked under polesitter Brian Diveley at the start and blew away his eight pursuers. Miller had a half-straightaway lead after two laps and continued to stretch his margin ove runner-up Greg Johnson. Steve Francis, like Johnson driving a No. 15 car, was a distant third with Mike Marlar and Earl Pearson Jr. even further back. Scott James, running his first race in the Rayburn house car, was an early retiree in the caution-free prelim. Dively was sixth.

FInish: Matt Miller, Greg Johnson, Steve Francis, Mike Marlar, Earl Pearson Jr., Brian Diveley, Jeff Watson, John Mayes Jr., Scott James.

Second even heat

Sixth-starting Kent Robinson took the lead from polesitter Chad Ruhlman on a lap-three restart and held on the rest of the way, using primarily the low groove for an impressive victory. Ruhlman, driving one of his brother Brian's cars, led early on the high side and settled for second ahead of Randy Korte, the final transferree. Seventh-starting Steve Lance Jr. flirted with a transfer spot before slipping back to sixth at the finish behind Jonathan Davenport and Josh Richards. Two cautions slowed the action, both for Doug Drown. A lap-three yellow appeared for debris that came off Drown's D.J. Miller-owned machine, forcing him to the tail for the restart; he spun in turn three on the fifth lap.

Finish: Kent Robinson, Chad Ruhlman, Randy Korte, Jonathan Davenport, Josh Richards, Steve Lance Jr., Doug Drown, Gary Christian, Devin Moran, Scott Clifford.

Second odd heat

Polesitter Tim McCreadie led all the way, building a half-straightaway advantage at halfway and running unchallenged to earn a front-row spot for Thursday's preliminary feature. Fellow front-row starter Darrell Lanigan was second while Ricky Weiss got the third and final transfer spot in the caution-free prelim.

Finish: Tim McCreadie, Darrell Lanigan, Ricky Weiss, Jerry Bowersock, Mason Zeigler, Ryan Sutter, Henry Cooper, Justin Chance, Brian Gray, Jim Gingery.

First even heat

Chris Madden made a high-side move after an early restart to sweep around Chad Simpson and race to an eight-lap victory. Simpson hung tough on the inside groove but slipped back to third behind eventual runner-up Shane Clanton at halfway. Madden held off Clanton on the high side the rest of the way while Simpson lost the final transfer spot to Michael Chilton at the white flag. Tim Manville spun at the conclusion of the first lap and headed pitside with a flat left-rear tire.

Finish: Chris Madden, Shane Clanton, Michael Chilton, Chad Simpson, Mike Spatola, Jon Henry, Ryan VanderVeen, Shannon Thornsberry, Tim Manville. Scratched: Doug Zartler

First odd heat

Fifth-starting Casey Roberts came alive early and raced to victory in the first eight-lap heat. He took the checkers ahead of front-row starters R.J. Conley and Andrew Reaume as they all transferred to th emain event. Conley gained a bit on Roberts later but settled for second. Overall fast qualifier Ky Harper never seriously contended up front and finished fifth in the eight-car heat.

Finish: Casey Roberts, R.J. Conley, Andrew Reaume, Bobby Pierce, Ky Harper, Chub Frank, Casey Noonan, Robby Hensley, Tim Lance. Scratched: Steve Isenberg.

Post-qualifying notes

Brian Shirley blamed the spin out on his warmup lap and his subsequent poor qualifying effort on testing. “We were doing some trial and error stuff with the front end, and it was more error I guess.” ... Making his first laps since injuring his back in an Aug. 22 rollover wreck at Volunteer Speedway, Don O’Neal feels comfortable being back in the MasterSbilt house car, but he’s glad the track is a little on the slower side tonight. “I feel just fine, but it’s probably a good thing we’re running in the 17s instead of wide open around this place,” said O’Neal, who qualified 17th fastest. ... Doug Drown is driving D.J. Miller’s Rocket Chassis this weekend after his usual Weekley Motorsports team decided to take the weekend off. Drown has driven Miller’s older car before, but never on a track as big as Eldora. “It’s totally different bringing this thing here,” Drown said. “At least we have all night tonight to get this thing figured out.” ... Matt Irey spun out of turn two as time trials began, then got into the wall on his next attempt. ... Don Hammer got into the turn-one wall on his first time-trial lap. ... Jeff Sloan spun in turn two while qualifying.

Time trials

Ky Harper of Tiffin, Ohio, the first of 112 entrants to hit the track for the opening night of World 100 weekend, topped time trials with a 16.811-second lap at the historic half-mile oval.

The 23-year-old Harper was one of just three drivers to crack the 17-second mark at Eldora along with Chris Madden (16.914) of Gray Court, S.C., and Ricky Weiss (16.976) of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Harper spun a "3" on the inversion wheel to set the inversion for the night’s 12 heats, putting him inside the second row of the first odd heat. Madden will start inside the second row of the first even heat.

Race format

Thursday’s program starts with time trials — with three cars on the clock at a time — that will split the field into odd and even groups, with odd-numbered qualifiers (1, 3, 5, 7, etc.) in the first group and even-numbered qualifier (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) in the second group.

Each group will run a complete racing program with the top three finishers in each of six eight-lap heat races transferring to the each feature (there will be a heat-race inversion). The top two finishers in each of three consolation races also transfer to each feature.

Friday’s action will be identical to Thursday’s program while Saturday’s racing will follow the traditional World 100 program of six heats and two consolation races before the $46,000-to-win finale. Saturday’s heat races will be lined up according to a driver’s best time trial from Thursday or Friday’s program.

Pre-race notes

Ray Guss Jr. of Moline, Ill., is competing at Eldora this weekend for the first time since the 2002 World 100. The veteran IMCA racer has only made a few Super Late Model starts the season, but he’s had past success at Eldora with a victory in the Johnny Appleseed Classic in 1988. He hopes to use tonight to reacquaint himself with the track so he can take advantage of his No. 1 pill draw for Friday’s qualifying session. “Hopefully tonight we can get our act together so we can make good of that tomorrow.” ... Gary Christian of Broken Bow, Okla., is at Eldora for just the second time and the first time in two years. The teenaged driver hopes to build on the momentum of a victory Sunday at Twin Cities Raceway in North Vernon, Ind. Christian has raced quite a bit in the Midwest this summer while working out of C.J. Rayburn’s Indiana chassis shop. He plans to debut a new Rayburn Race Car later this season. ... Steve Lance Jr. of Cuba, Ill., is fielded one of his brother Tim’s No. 48 Pierce Race Cars this weekend. With no engine for his own race car this weekend, Tim offered Steve one of his cars for the weekend if he’d help get both cars ready. “He called me up and asked if I wanted to drive one of his,” Steve Lance said. “I thought 'That’s pretty nice of him.’ Then I got to his shop and saw neither car had been unloaded since the Summernationals and I said ‘Ah, I see what’s going on here.’ ” ... Billy Moyer Jr. is skipping the World 100 to "try to make some money," according to his Hall of Fame father Billy Moyer. The younger Moyer plans to enter a Comp Cams Super Dirt Series event this weekend closer to the family's Batesville, Ark., shop. ... Canadian racer Ricky Weiss feels good about chasing his first crown jewel start after a sixth-place finish in his Eldora debut at last weekend's Sunoco ALMS event. "We learned a lot coming down here last week, so I think we should be pretty close," said Weiss, who has Terry Casey helping him out in the pit area this weekend. ... Donnie and Devin Moran's hauler had a breakdown and they missed the draw for starting spots by about a half-hour. They'll be the night's final qualifiers. ... Matt Miller of Waterville, Ohio, enters as winner of the previous Late Model event at Eldora. He earned $3,000 for the Sunoco American Late Model Series-sanctioned Baltes Classic on Sept. 1. ... Jody Knowles of Tyrone, Ga., is making his Eldora debut in a Capital Race Car he's won twice with at Dixie Speedway since debuting it in mid-July. ... Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., is entered in a Chad Stapleton-owned Barry Wright Race Car, as he has customarily done in recent races at Eldora. ... Henry Cooper of Star, Miss., is among drivers making his Eldora debut. ... The track is providing a live pay-per-view of the event at eldoraspeedway.com. The DirtonDirt.com Countdown to the World Pre-Race Show begins at 5 p.m.
