Carson Ferguson battled Jimmy Owens to win Friday's rain-postponed race.
What won the race: After trading multiple sliders with Jimmy Owens after the race's halfway mark, second-starting Carson Ferguson of Lincolnton, N.C., regained the lead for good on lap 25 and paced the remaining circuits to win Friday's rain-postponed 40-lap Schaeffer's Southern Nationals stop at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Ferguson, the two-time Spring Nationals champion, earned $7,553 for his third career Southern Nationals victory and his first of the season.
Quotable: “At Tazewell (Speedway) we just adjusted ourself out if it the other night,” Ferguson said. “I was too scared to touch the car because we were good in hot laps, but man, what a race. I didn’t know how close Jimmy (Owens) was, but I felt like I was slowing down a lot for the lapped cars. He went around me (on lap 21) and he definitely made me kick it in another gear.”
Key notes: Ferguson led twice for 36 laps (1-20, 25-40). ... Already crowned the 2023 Southern Nationals champion following July 30's final points race at Tazewell Speedway, fourth-starting Owens, of Newport, Tenn., led laps 21-24 before settling for second, 1.622 seconds back. ... Eighth-starting Steven Roberts took third on lap 25 and rounded-out the podium. ... Seventh-starting Dalton Cook battled 10th-starting Donald McIntosh in the closing laps, prevailing to finish fourth while McIntosh settled for fifth. ... Fresh off a $10,000 Governor's Cup victory last weekend at Talladega Short Track, Sam Seawright advanced six positions and finished sixth. ... Haiden Cowan gained five spots and finished 10th. ... Fourth-running Mike Benedum drew the race's third and final caution with a flat right rear on lap 35 and settled for 11th after changing the tire. ... Friday's feature, originally scheduled for July 21 before rain postponed the event following qualifying, lasted 21 minutes with 11 competitors completing all 40 laps; 12 were running at the finish.
On the move: Pearson Lee Williams of Dublin, Ga., started 16th and finished eighth.
