Mason Zeigler with the $12,055 check in Bedford Speedway victory lane.
What won the race: Mason Zeigler's accidental contact that sent race-long leader Alex Ferree spinning with eight laps to go propelled the Chalk Hill, Pa., driver to Friday's Labor Day Classic victory at Bedford (Pa.) Speedway, a race that paid a cool $12,055. Zeigler won the 55-lap feature, sanctioned by the Jay's Automotive United Late Model Series, by 1.973 seconds over Matt Cosner.
Quotable: "I just got to his inside and really tried to stick that bottom. I wouldn't say (Ferree) turned left on me, but it was crowded getting in," Zeigler told DirtonDirt.com. "It was narrow. It was fast. We were racing in the rubber. I just got tight and lost the air off the car and got loose. Quarter-paneled the s--- out of him. I feel terrible about it. Alex is my good buddy. ... I didn't get loose all night long, not the littlest bit. It had to be air, both of us getting in there deep. As I said, I feel terrible about it."
Key notes: Alex Ferree of Saxonburg, Pa., led comfortably for 47 laps before the untimely incident with Zeigler. Ferree didn't continue the race and was credited with 15th: "He just drove in too hard, got into me, and dumped me. Twelve-grand, gone," Ferree told DirtonDirt.com. "On one restart (lap 44) he cleared me on a slider, but I drove underneath him, got back by him. The next restart (on lap 47) I rode in middle-low to block that off. But he just drove it in lower and harder. I don't know what he expected. It is what it is ... racing. It happens sometimes." ... It was Zeigler’s second big payday at the Bedford half-mile this year, adding to May’s $8,700 Billy Winn Classic triumph. … Zeigler started the night as the apparent fast-time recipient with a lap of 19.444 seconds, but because he failed to exit the track in turn two where ULMS officials told drivers to peel off the racetrack following a time trial run, his fastest lap was disallowed. His 19.558 slower lap still netted him fourth quickest of 19 cars Group A. ... ULMS points leader and Appalachian Mountain Speedweek champion Tyler Emory of King George, Va., started sixth and finished eighth after running as high as fourth. … Emory’s closest competitor on the ULMS tour this summer, Ryan Montgomery of Fairmont, W.Va., charged from the B-main to salvage ninth. … Drake Troutman of Hyndman, Pa., was among those that failed to qualify. Fuel filter issues ended Troutman’s heat race on lap four of eight, leaving the 18-year-old to a B-main rally that never materialized (eighth to fifth, two spots shy of transferring). ... Ten drivers finished on the lead lap of the feature that lasted 37 minutes. ... Six cautions slowed the main event: lap 29 for Colton Flinner's spin after contact from Coleby Frye, lap 37 for debris, lap 44 for Chuck Clise's spin, on the lap 44 restart for Max Blair's spin after contact with Frye, on lap 47 for Justin Weaver after contact from Montgomery, and on the lap 47 restart for Ferree's fall from the lead.
On the move: Kyle Hardy of Stephens City, Va., started 13th and finished fourth.
