Winner Jamie Oliver in victory lane at Tri-County Racetrack.
What won the race: Competing in the event honoring his late grandfather, pole-starting Jamie Oliver of Murphy, N.C., scored a commanding flag-to-flag victory in Monday's $10,034 third annual C.T. Barnett Memorial at Tri-County Racetrack. Oliver led all 50 laps to earn his first career Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series triumph and the richest payday of his career.
Quotable: “Man, ain’t even no way to put it into words,” Oliver said. “There’s so many people who sat in these grandstands, my dad, my mom, we’ve sacrificed everything. We’ve done this ourselves. What a car man, I just couldn’t ask for no better. But the one that built me my first car (C.T. Barnett), he seen something in me nobody else did. I didn’t carry the Barnett last name like all the rest of them, but now they know where I come from.”
Key notes: Second-starting David Payne trailed Oliver, his fellow local racer, for the entire distance, but never challenged for the lead and finished 0.617 of a second back. ... Payton Freeman and Kenny Collins maintained pace with the frontrunners, finishing third and fourth. ... Eighth-starting Kurt English traded fifth place with ninth-starting Jason Hiett several times throughout the 50-lapper, prevailing to complete the top five while Hiett settled for sixth; it was English's best career SAS finish. ... Chase Oliver drew the race's third caution when he slowed with a flat left-rear on lap 26; Oliver changed the tire and finished seventh. ... Series points leader Caleb Gay started seventh and finished eighth. ... Monday's feature was slowed by four incidents, the most significant requiring a seven-minute red flag for cleanup when Floyd Self hit the turn-two wall and collected fifth-running Charles Devine on lap 15. Devine was piloting the Ray Cook-owned Capital Race Car at the track operated by Cook. The race lasted 28 minutes, with nine drivers running at the finish. ... The event honored Clarence “C.T.” Barnett of nearby Murphy, N.C., the first man who ever graded the Tri-County Racetrack surface and attended the first event in 1967. Barnett’s racing legacy lives on through his sons Joe and Glenn Barnett, who pulled off after six laps and finished 16th, along with his grandson, the race-winning Oliver. ... Ronnie Hedden scratched.
On the move: Joe Denby of Winchester, Tenn., started 13th and finished ninth.
Winner's sponsors: Oliver’s Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Oliver Logging & Trucking, Devine Towing, Jacob Hamby Excavating, Interstate Welding & Steel Supply, 4 Boyz Racing Supply, Clements Automotive, Jason Welshan with Competition Racing, B&O Racing Shocks, The Real Wrappers and Collins Signs.
Points chase: After Tri-County: 1. Caleb Gay (1,044); 2. Dan Cox (750); 3. Billy Franklin (712); 4. Matthew Brocato (506); 5. Dalton Cook (468).
