Ashton Winger celebrates at Magnolia Motor Speedway.
What won the race: Regaining the point from early leader Cade Dillard with an inside move exiting turn four, third-starting Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., led the final 38 laps to win Saturday's $12,000 Cotton Pickin' at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Winger led twice for 39 laps (15, 23-60) to earn his first career Comp Cams Super Dirt Series feature victory.
Quotable: “I actually think it was good that I didn’t break out in the lead,” Winger said. “I was able to kinda sit behind (Jeremy) Shaw there and I was able to kinda find a line that worked for me. I knew whenever I found what I did, especially down here leaving (turn) three, I moved my entry out (by) two car-lengths and just stayed where Cade (Dillard) was at. It’s always fun racing with him man, he’s hard to beat and he’s really really good. It’s really awesome to race with good guys like him and it’s cool to see David (Breazeale) have a good run.”
Key notes: Winger became the fifth driver to win his first Comp Cams Series race this season, joining Scott Crigler, Ricky Thornton Jr., Dale McDowell and Jeremy Shaw. ... Defending Cotton Pickin' winner, second-starting Dillard, of Robeline, La., led twice for 21 laps (1-14, 16-22) before giving way to Winger and finishing 3.641 seconds back. ... Using the extreme low line, 13th-starting David Breazeale took third on lap 36 and completed the podium. ... Eleventh-starting Neil Baggett used an outside move on lap 52 to take fourth at his home track. ... Wil Herrington ran as high as second in the early laps before fading to finish fifth. ... David McCoy improved six positions and finished eighth. ... Josh Putnam ran as high as fifth on lap 40 before making slight contact with the wall and slipping to finish ninth. ... Kyle Beard gained 11 spots and completed the top 10. ... After winning Friday's 40-lap, $4,000 opener, series points leader Billy Moyer Jr. started 12th and finished 11th. ... Clay Stuckey rebounded to finish 16th after slowing with a flat right-rear to draw the race's first caution on lap four. ... Second-running Jeremy Shaw slowed under the lap-four yellow and pulled off with apparent right-rear suspension damage. ... Hunter Rasdon spun on lap 27 to draw the race's fifth and final caution. ... Hall of Famer and 10th-running Billy Moyer ran as high as fifth before slowing on lap 25 and calling it a night. ... Saturday's 33-minute feature saw 10 competitors complete 60 laps, with 20 running at the finish. ... Monte Skinner slowed before taking the green and required a push to the pits.
On the move: Friday's runner-up Evan Ellis of Plantersville, Miss., started 18th and finished seventh.
