Clay Harris takes the checkers for the opening $3,000 semifeature.
What won the race: Repelling home-track standout Chad Thrash on the final lap, seventh-starting Clay Harris of Jupiter, Fla., scored a surprising upset in the first 30-lap preliminary feature in Friday’s Coors Light Fall Classic at Whynot Motorsports Park. Harris edged Thrash by 0.397 of a second at the line to secure the $3,000 victory.
Key notes: Harris has many Limited and Crate Late Model victories, but the Whynot victory marked his first Super Late Model victory. ... A tangle between front-runners Ashton Winger, who led laps 1-17, and Tyler Erb on lap 18 sent Erb to the tail and Winger into the hot pit. … Winger rallied from the back to finish sixth with Erb crossing the line in ninth. … Harris led laps 18-19, lost the spot to Thrash for laps 20-25 and then regained command for good on the 26th circuit. ... Clay Stuckey drew the first caution on lap eight after getting turned sideways on the frontstretch. … The three-day weekend concludes with Saturday’s 60-lap, $15,000-to-win finale.
On the move: Clay Fisher of Dewitt, Ark., started 13th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Harris’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Wilkerson Farms, Rescue Metal Framing, Impact Electric and Dunn Rite Construction.
Points chase: Whynot track points before Friday: 1. Neil Baggett (76); 2. Brian Rickman (74); 3. Kyle Beard (72); 4. Mikey Kile (54); 5. Trey Mills (50).
