Cryderman's penalty hands Doar DTRA finale
By Greg Parent
Cedar Lake SpeedwayNEW RICHMOND, Wis. (Sept. 15) — Talk about a roller-coaster victory. Hometown driver Pat Doar had good news, bad news and then good news again in the final 21 laps of the Late Model portion of the Legendary 100 at Cedar Lake Speedway.
First, Doar was handed the point when leader Brent Larson broke on the 19th lap. Moments later, Doar thought he'd let a victory slip away when Joel Cryderman took the lead on lap 38. And finally, Doar discover that indeed he was the winner after Cryderman was penalized five positions for hitting the restart cone on the lap-36 restart.
That gave Doar $5,000 and his second consecutive victory in the Dirt Track Racing Association season-ender. Ashley Anderson got second followed by Chuckie DeSmith, Adam Hensel and Steve Laursen. Despite taking the checkered flag first, Cryderman was docked five position and ended up sixth.
Doar and Larson started on the front row with Doar leading the first few laps before Larson took command. Larson began stretching his lead, but his No. B1 began trailing smoke by the eighth lap. He worked through lapped traffic but the smoke continued, and he slowed exiting turn two on the 19th lap and rolled to a stop to bring out the first caution. Suspension problems and a flat tire stymied Larson's machine.
Doar inherited the point for the restart with Cryderman, Anderson, DeSmith and Hensel in pursuit. DeSmith moved past Anderson on lap 24 for third while Cryderman began challenging Doar for the lead on lap 28 as a side-by-side battle developed.
Anderson moved back past DeSmith for third on lap 28 and began closing in on the leaders.
The final caution of the race waved on lap 37 when Cory Mahder stopped in turn one with a breakdown. With scoring reverting back to lap 36, the caution set the stage for a four-lap dash to the finish.
On the restart, Cryderman struck the restart cone. That didn't slow him on the track as he applied the pressure on Doar over the next two laps and drove by for the lead on lap 38.Cryderman crossed the finish line for an apparent victory, but officials assessed the five-position penalty for striking the cone, restoring Doar to the lead and the victory.
